ADEL — Pushing across five runs in the fifth inning of game two, the Screven County Lady Gamecocks lived to play another day with a 3-1, 5-2 sweep of Region 1-AA runner-up Cook County's Lady Hornets in Adel Wednesday. Improving to 26-8 on the season, SCHS will play the winner of the series between Region 4-AA champ Pike County and Region 2-AA No. 4 Brantley County next Wednesday and Thursday.
“Everything wasn't always pretty tonight,” said SCHS coach Billy Pollock. “The girls did what they had to do when they had to do it. This is a veteran team that is not going to get rattled about being down or being on the road. We got great pitching and enough good defense and hitting to move on.”
Heading into the bottom of the fifth (Screven was the home team in game two) Cook held a 2-0 lead. A little shakey fielding by SCHS and a rare successful double steal put the game in that situation. The crucial fifth saw Madyson Torres lead off with a walk. Dawn Stewart, Morgan Boswell and Sydnee Weaver laid down bunts with Cook getting no one out in the process. “In that situation we were able to put a lot of pressure on their defense and for one inning, they broke.”
With the game suddenly tied Courtney Burns ripped a double to plate two and that was followed by cousin Tiffanie Burns' single to raise the count to 5-2. The cushion was more than enough for Marla Thompson who won the 79th and 80th games of her four-year career.
That mark is fifth all time. She allowed just five hits in two complete games, striking out 18 while walking but one hitter.
Game one saw the Lady Gamecocks put runner after runner on base, but never get the “knock out” hit to break the game open. While Thompson was perfect for four innings, SCHS was leaving seven runners on and scoring only once when Courtney Burns, who had doubled, scored on a grounder by Lauren Thomas. In the sixth Boswell and Weaver picked up rbi as they pushed across courtesy runner Yana Felton and Thomas.
Game on saw eight different starters have one hit and the one who didn't, Boswell, put down a pair of sac bunts, including a run producer. Game two saw Thomas record a pair of hits.
