    DUBLIN — Senior Ashley Burke and freshman Mattie Wynn Hendrix finished first and second respectively to propel the Bulloch Academy girls’ cross country team to the GISA Region 2-AAA championship Monday.
    Burke clocked a 22:48 for the victory and Hendrix crossed the line eight seconds later in the meet that was held at Trinity Christian School.
    Other members of the winning squad were senior Heather Jacobs (10th, 25:11), freshman Kyra Samuels (11th, 25:32) and freshman grader Koree Jacobs (14th, 26:11). The last Lady Gator region title came in 2004.
    For Burke, it was her first region title but the fifth time in her high-school career that she has been named All-Region by virtue of a top seven finish. It was the first honor for Hendrix. Jessie Rushing, the Lady Gator head coach and a BA alumnae, was named the region Coach of the Year.
    The Gator guys took third in the meet.
Sophomore Kyle Samuels placed fourth with a time of 19:46. He also garnered All-Region honors.
    Other finishers were senior Cody Lanier (21:57), senior Justin Lane (22:25), freshman Wilson Joiner (22:42) and senior David Liu (23:00).
    Both teams advance to the GISA Class AAA state cross country meet Saturday at Darton State College in Albany.

GSU VB wins fourth straight
    Kym Coley notched 15 kills and hit .684 for the match, and Georgia Southern served 11 aces as a team to earn a 3-0 (25-9, 25-13, 25-12) non-conference volleyball victory over Savannah State Tuesday night in Hanner Fieldhouse.
    Freshman Ashley Jones had a team-high four aces to go along with four kills, while classmate Cathrine Murray finished with seven kills, 10 digs, three aces and two blocks for Georgia Southern (6-15).
    Coley had just two hitting errors on the night, tallied her 15 kills in 19 swings and added four blocks. Avery Stephens recorded 10 digs and an ace, and Kat Minnerly collected 36 assists.
    Justice Dilworth led Savannah State (4-20) with four kills, and Alexis Washington finished with seven digs.

SBCPRD Bowl season coming up
    The Statesboro Bulloch County Parks and Recreation Department will host Pee Wee Flag Bowl Games on Thursday.
    The Crazy Nick’s Signs and Designs Bowl game will feature the New York Jets against the Houston Texans at 5:30 p.m., in Brooklet on Field 3. The Kiwanis Club of Statesboro Bowl Game will feature the Arizona Cardinals and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at 5:30 p.m. in Nevils. The Baltimore Ravens and the Seattle Seahawks will face off in the Sugar Bowl at 5:30 p.m. at the Portal Athletic Complex. The Downtown Rotary Club Bowl will feature the Pittsburgh Steelers against the Miami Dolphins at 6:30 p.m. in Brooklet on Field 3. Wing Maxx Bowl Game will see the Buffalo Bills take on the Tennessee Titans at 6:30 p.m. in Nevils. The James L. Oates III Enterprises Bowl Game will feature the New York Giants against the Cincinnati Bengals at 6:30 p.m. on Mill Creek Field 9.
    The Tiny Mite Flag Bowl Games will be held on Monday.
    The Mississippi State Bulldogs and the Oregon Ducks will square off in the Orange Bowl at 5:30 p.m. in Brooklet on Field 3. The Shane’s Rib Shack Bowl Game will feature the Florida A&M Rattlers against the Georgia Southern Eagles at 5:30 p.m. at Mill Creek Field 6. The Kiwanis Club of Statesboro Bowl Game will see the matchup between the Michigan State Spartans and the Iowa Hawkeyes at 6 p.m. in Nevils. The Miami Hurricanes and the Wisconsin Badgers will face off in the Crazy Nick’s Inflatables Bowl Game at 6 p.m. on Mill Creek Field 9. The Sea Island Bank Bowl Game will see the Boise State Broncos take on the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks at 6:30 p.m. on Mill Creek Field 6. The Whitfield Signs Bowl Game will host the USC Trojans and the Washington Huskies at 6:30 p.m. in Brooklet on Field 2. The Zaxby’s Jamboree will feature the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, the Texas Longhorns, and the UCLA Bruins at 6 pm at Portal High School.
    The tackle football games will be held on Saturday, November 1. The schedules for those games will be based on rankings and will be out next week.
