    Bulloch Academy’s girls took first and the boys were second in a multi-team cross country meet at Gator Alley Monday.
    Five Lady Gator girls finished second, third, fifth, seventh and 12th for the win while the Gator guys had a fourth, fifth, seventh, ninth and 10th for second place.
    Freshman Ashley Burke finished the 3.2-mile course in 23:18 for second in the 20-runner meet while sister Haley, a senior, was third with a 23:41. Freshman Heather Jacobs was fourth (24:23), senior Maddie Manack took fifth (25:20) and freshman Tatum Blitch was seventh.
    For the BA boys, freshman Will Marsh was the highest finisher with a 20:50 to notch fifth place in the 40-runner meet. Classmate Cody Lanier was sixth with a 21:00. Senior Hunter Jacobs was ninth (21:57), Themba Twala was 11th (22:16) and sophomore Christopher Williams was 12th (22:17).
    Bulloch Academy travels to Augusta Thursday to battle in the Westminster ‘Fastest Five’ Challenge.
    In junior varsity action Monday, the Bulloch Academy boys won a three-team meet.
    Brett Thomas was the highest BA finisher, finishing the 1.6-mile course in 10:37 in the 38-runner meet. Preston Rincon-Nevil was fifth (10:47), Kyle Samuels was sixth (10:48), Bennon Smith was 12th (11:57) and Aaron Feldman was 13th (12:11).
    For the BA girls, Mattie Wynn Hendrix finished second in the 23-runner race with a time of 11:41.
    Mary Claire Duggan won the elementary girls’ race with a time of 13:08. Saylor Callawy with second (13:21), Brittney Potter was third (14:50), Nina Samuels was fourth (14:55) and Lauren Lanier was fifth (15:12).
    Alec Brannen won the elementary boys’ race with a time of 11:51. Colin Davis was second, Aidan Patterson was third, John Coburn was fourth and Ben Dasher was fifth.

SHS takes first at JCHS
    MILLEN — Statesboro’s Raider Team brought home first place in the Physical Fitness test from Jenkins County Saturday, competing against six surrounding high schools.         The 10-man male team ended with a total of 1,457 push-ups and sit ups, along with completing the half mile long Cross Country Relay first while carrying approximately 320 pounds of equipment.             The team finished second on the Map Reading Test with the score of 314 of 400 points. It took them one minute and twenty-seven seconds on the Rope Bridge event which required the cadets to build a bridge and have the entire team conduct a mock river crossing. The times gave the Blue Devils an overall first place out of seven teams.
    The male mix team, consisting of six males and four females, finished in fourth place. The focus of both teams is preparing themselves to bring home a win at the Regional Championship on Oct. 15, thus earning a trip to State on Oct. 22.

Lady Eagles open SoCon play
    The Georgia Southern volleyball team (7-8) opens Southern Conference play at home with a pair of home matches this week. The Eagles play host to Wofford today at 6 p.m. and Furman Saturday at 1 p.m.
    GSU snapped a six-game losing streak with an undefeated run through the Bash in the Boro last weekend. Georgia Southern improved to 6-2 at home with four-straight wins including a 3-0 victory over Ohio on Friday. The wins come at the right time for the Eagles, who will start their 2010 Southern Conference Tournament Title defense this week.
