Local Roundup: BA cross country runs in Dublin

    DUBLIN — Bulloch Academy freshman Kyle Samuels was the only Bulloch Academy runner, varsity or middle school, to finish in the Top 10 of the Trinity Christian Crusader Cross Country Invitational Tuesday.
    He clocked a 20:05 to finish seventh in the 83-runner, 3.2-mile race. Samuels led the BA varsity boys to a third-place finish among the nine teams which had five runners.
    Other top Gator runners were senior Cody Lanier (23:48, 21st), freshman Wilson Joiner (24:11, 27th), freshman Chet Mason (24:14, 29th), junior Preston Nevil-Rincon (24:48, 35th).
Senior Heather Jacobs was the only Lady Gator runner, turning in a time of 27:27 to finish 17th in the 44-runner race.
    In middle school, Leo Mendez turned in a time of 16:05 on the two-mile course to lead the BA boys to a fifth-place finish. He finished 23rd in the 69-runner race.
    Other top Gators were Jacob Skipper (17:05), Alex Nguyen (17:45), Tate Johnson (18:32) and Winston Daniels (20:21).
    For the Gator girls, Brittney Potter clocked a 16:28 for 16th place in the 53-runner field. Other top Lady Gator finishers were Nina Samuels (18:34), Ashleigh Skipper (18:36) and Ella Burke (24:31).
    Bulloch Academy varsity, middle school and elementary teams will compete in a multi-team meet at George L. Smith State Park on Monday.

GSU women look to build on hot start
    Georgia Southern women’s soccer (4-1) returns to action this weekend with a pair of home games against Alabama State and North Florida.
    The contests bookend the Springhill Suites Invitational which includes a slate of four games on Friday and Sunday.

UNC VB tourney begins Friday
    Georgia Southern volleyball (0-6) finishes the bulk of its non-conference slate at the Carolina Classic beginning Friday, where the Eagles will meet two ranked teams in No. 17 North Carolina and No. 16 Kentucky.
    Senior Jamie DeRatt is 330 kills and 294 digs away from 1,000 for her career. Senior Kym Coley is 370 kills away from 1,000 for her career, and junior Crysten Curry is 80 blocks shy of 300 for her career, which will put her at seventh on the school's all-time list. Junior Kat Minnerly needs 478 assists for 2,000.

Eagles host home soccer tourney
    Georgia Southern men’s soccer hosts the Springhill Suites Invitational this weekend with a full slate of games at Eagle Field.
    The Eagles open the tournament on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. against Florida Atlantic. The tournament also includes Mercer and UNC Asheville.

LCMS football improves to 2-0
    Langston Chapel Middle School got behind early with first-half turnovers, but bounced back to knock off Screven County 22-12 on Wednesday.
    Langston Chapel (2-0) got rushing touchdowns from Craig Jones, Shaun Hill and Jamie Rich. Darrieon Fields intercepted a Screven County pass.
    LCMS will return to action on Wednesday against Southeast Bulloch Middle School.
