Bulloch Academy's Taylor Colllins swipes home in the first inning of the Lady Gators' win Monday.

Bulloch Academy senior catcher Taylor Collins played her final regular-season game at home Monday.

She decided to go out with a bang.

Collins was 3-for-3 with one RBI, had three stolen bases and was credited with nine putouts as she helped lead the Lady Gators to a 4-0 victory over Region 4-AAA foe John Milledge Academy.

"This may sound weird," she said, "but I honestly didn't even think about it being my last game. I think I have been trying too hard to help the team and, it may sound funny, but today I stopped trying so hard and things just kind of fell into place."

Bulloch (17-2 overall and 5-0 in region play) scored two in the first inning, one in the third and one in the sixth for the victory. Collins played a part in all of them.

In the first, junior Mary Margaret Reeves led off the game with a double, stole third and scored. Collins singled, advanced to second and third on passes balls and stole home.

In the third, freshman Page Spence reached on an infield single. The current Statesboro Herald Female Athlete of the Week pounded a triple to plate Spence and give BA a 3-0 lead.

In the sixth, Collins singled, took second on a passed ball, stole third and scored on a Marianna Peebles single.

But Collins was quick to put the spotlight on her teammates rather than herself.

"I feels great that we have accomplished one of our goals (of winning their first Class AAA region title)," she said. "But we are no where near finished."

Collins caught junior pitcher Lauren Dennard, who went the distance and allowed just two hits and struck out nine batters. She faced 24 batters, just three batters over the magical number of three per inning (21). Dennard threw 88 pitches, 70 strikes and 18 balls.

Freshman Ashley Burke was 1-for-2 with a double while Spence, Reeves and Peebles all had one hit each.

Senior first baseman Amelia Akins and senior outfielder Haley Burke was also honored prior to the game.

The Lady Gators travel to Bellville today to battle Pinewood Christian Academy in the final region game. As the region champion, Bulloch earned a first-round bye in the Class AAA state tournament. The Lady Gators will have some tune-up games next week in preparation for hosting a second-round playoff series (best two-of-three) on Oct. 12.
