Gamecocks fall in 44-20 loss against Jefferson County
Screven

The Screven County Gamecocks entered Friday's Region 3-AA opener against Jefferson County as the
No. 6 team in the state, but that will be changing for the worse after Screven suffered a 44-20 setback to the Warriors at Kelly Memorial Field.

The Gamecocks (4-1, 0-1 Region 3-AA) were their own worst enemy throughout the night. Screven County fumbled away the opening kickoff to spot Jefferson County a quick lead and a second fumble led to more Warrior points. The Gamecocks managed to tie the game at 14-14 late in the first half and appeared to be taking charge until quarterback Armani Bunbury was sacked and stripped, leading to a 48-yard fumble return for a touchdown for Jefferson County.

Jefferson County (3-2, 1-0) continued to keep the Gamecock offense in check throughout the second half and the Warrior offense continued to slowly pull away for the victory. Screven actually held a 278-261 advantage in offensive yards, but the multiple fumbles run back for touchdowns meant that the Warrior offense didn't have to be at its best..

Now that region play has begun, a quick rebound is in order for Screven County. Next week, the Gamecocks will hit the road for a date at Harlem.
