ECI beats Portal 50-14 on short week

Amid the ballyhoo of the impending Tropical Storm Hermine, Portal’s game with Emanuel County Institute was moved back to Thursday night.

The change in schedule may or may not have hurt the Panthers, but at the end of the night ECI stood on top 50-14. ECI has now scored 150 points through their first three games, and Portal head coach Matt Smith knew the Bulldogs would be good — but not this good.

“They were better than advertised,” Smith said. “This is by far the best offense ECi has had since Kearson has been the head coach.”

Two turnovers in the first quarter didn’t help Portal, allowing ECI to quickly get their first two scores. Powered by quarterback Rhett Gray, ECI moved the ball down the field with ease as Portal quickly tried to make up ground.

Portal’s two touchdowns came by Craig Ware on the ground and on a fade pass from Jake Brown to Wyee Williams.

“I was really proud of the efforts from our guys,” Smith said. “You can tell the difference from this year to last year. I think the weight room this summer was the biggest thing.”

Portal (0-2) comes back home next week to take on Jenkins County at 7:30 p.m.
