BA falls to Frederica, now 1-1 in region play
BA

A fast start and a frantic finish fell just short as Bulloch Academy dropped a 28-21 game to Frederica Academy Friday night in St. Simons Island.
After winning a battle of attrition by a count of 8-7 last season, the Gators (5-3, 1-1 Region 2-AAA) tried to set a more offensive tone early in Friday’s game. Brandon Merrill notched touchdown runs of 4 and 5 yards, respectively, and Bulloch found itself with an early 14-0 lead.
The Knights responded with a touchdown to cut the lead in half before controversy took over.
Frederica appeared to call for — and receive — a timeout shortly before blocking a BA punt. Ultimately, officials didn’t register the stop in play and the Knights utilized a possible fourth timeout to stop the clock en route to tying the game just before halftime.
Frederica kept the momentum going with a pair of unanswered scores to begin the second half. The Knights seemed to be in cruise control, but the Gators pulled within 28-21 on a pitch and catch from Don Aaron to Jake Nelson.
With just over three minutes to play, Bulloch kicked deep and was able to force Frederica to punt for one final chance. A great reception and running effort from Brock Sapp got the Gators inside the Frederica 10, but the Knights’ defense held to preserve the Frederica win.
A win on Friday would have put the Gators in firm control of their region and all but guaranteed a home game to begin the GISA state playoffs next month.
Following the setback, Bulloch now faces a crucial home game against Trinity (Dublin) next week. A win will guarantee a state playoff berth and will keep the Gators in play for a postseason home game.
