Athlete of the Week: Sheffield sets Portal record
Portal

Portal’s Chase Sheffield had himself a day at the Southeast Bulloch track meet Tuesday afternoon in Brooklet.

Squaring off against four other schools, the Panthers’ star sprinter took the top spot in both the 100 and 200 meter dashes and was the top individual scorer for Portal, which placed third as a team in the meet.

Sheffield’s time of 10.96 seconds in the 100 meter dash not only earned first place, but set a new Portal record in the event.

“He’s been knocking on the door of breaking 11 seconds all season,” said Portal coach Justin Chester. “The best part is that he’s never satisfied even though he’s got the new record.”

Sheffield has been hard at work in both events in anticipation of qualifying for the state meet at the end of the season, and his work ethic is rubbing off on a young Panther squad.

“We’ve been trying to increase our numbers and feel good about our younger guys,” said Justin Chester. “Chase is a great example for them. He got injured during football season and missed out on a lot, but he is determined to take advantage of his senior year and has worked hard to get where he is today.”

Sheffield and the rest of the Panthers will look to build off of Tuesday’s success as Portal travels to Pembroke for the Bryan County relays Friday afternoon.
