Athlete of the Week: Griffin clutch for SCHS

Daniel Griffin had a hand in a pair of huge wins for Screven County on the baseball diamond this week.

Tuesday, Griffin pitched the final five innings of a nine-inning, 14-13 win over Swainsboro that featured three Gamecock comebacks. Trailing by two in the bottom of the ninth, Griffin came through at the plate, legging out a single that would begin Screven’s game-winning rally.

“I was glad to get in there and help the team,” said Griffin. “I felt bad giving up those runs in the last inning, so thankfully I was able to get the rally going.”

Wednesday, Griffin provided more fireworks at the plate. The senior doubled to knock in a run in the first inning before teeing off on a three-run blast in the third that put the Gamecocks ahead for good in a 10-3 pasting of Statesboro.

“I just saw the ball well,” said Griffin. “Sometimes you get into a zone and it seems like you hit everything hard and everything finds a hole.”

Griffin and the Gamecocks will try to keep the momentum rolling as they head to Brooklet for a Region 3-AA showdown with Southeast Bulloch Friday evening.
