Five Statesboro Blue Devils signed college scholarships on Monday at Statesboro High. Pictured left to right: Asia Crawford, Destinee Lanier, Andreas Ward, athletic director Ken LeCain, DeGamarri Matthews, and Walker Paul Tedders celebrate the five student athletes’ announcing their college decisions Monday afternoon. Soccer players Crawford and Lanier will play at South Georgia College and USC-Shalkehatchie, respectively. Ward will run track for Georgia Tech and both Matthews and Tedders will take the soccer pitch for Middle Georgia.
Lanier has been the Lady Devils’ last line of defense in goal, with Crawford patrolling the right back position in front of her, as Statesboro advanced to the second round of the state playoffs in each of the last two seasons.
Tedders played solid defense for the boys team as the Devils won 16 games and advanced to the Elite Eight of the playoffs. Matthews had a breakout season in his sophomore campaign, but sat out each of the last two seasons with knee injuries.
Ward leaves Statesboro as the school record holder in both the 110 meter hurdles and the 300 meter hurdles. He is also a member of the school record-holding 4x100 relay team. Ward finished second in both hurdling events at the state championships last week.
