Statesboro, Southeast Bulloch, Screven County and Metter will all open their respective soccer season’s today.
The Blue Devils will play their games at Mill Creek for at least the first few games of the season at the soccer complex off of Beasley Rd., due to construction at SHS. Both the girls’ and boys’ play Wayne County today, beginning at 5 p.m.
In Brooklet, both SEB teams face Toombs County with kick off at 5 p.m. Screven County’s girls travel to Lincoln County and Metter’s girls play at Treutlen County.
For Statesboro, 39 boys are on the SHS roster — 20 varsity and 19 jv.
“It’s the most we’ve ever had,” said Statesboro coach Chad Prosser.
Five of the 39 are seniors with the majority of players coming from the junior class. Prosser will put them in an attacking style meant to put pressure on the opposing defense.
“We’re going to try to play very direct,” said Prosser. “Anytime we have the ball — our goal is to to put the other team on the defensive. We really want to go at them with speed and try to make them make mistakes.”
SHS will run a 1-6-3, but two of the midfielders will be attacking when Statesboro has the ball, essentially creating a 3-4-3. When the Devils go on the defensive, however, those two ‘temporary strikers’ will return to the midfield.
Prosser added this year’s gameplan is based on this year’s talent, and not on Statesboro’s stuggles to score goals in 2007. The Devils beat Southeast Bulloch 12-0 in a scrimmage on Friday.
