METTER – It was a rough Friday night for the Tigers.
The Jefferson County Warriors (4-2, 3-0) wasted no time in blasting ahead of their region 3-AA rival Metter Tigers (0-6, 0-3) to cruise to a 59-21 victory.
The Warriors had success in the air and on the ground, amassing 449 total yards on the night with 300 on the ground and 149 in the air. Jefferson County capitalized off four costly Tiger turnovers during the contest.
The Tigers recorded their first touchdowns in their new stadium. With time expired in the second quarter, sophomore quarterback Blake Williams connected with Dexter Holloway for 35-yard bomb to put Metter on the board before halftime.
But the Metter touchdown came after 45 unanswered Warrior points and proved to be too little too late for the Tigers.
The Warriors opened the game by marching down the field for a touchdown. On the responding drive, a Tiger fumble on the snap was recovered by Arcephus King and returned 32 yards for the touchdown. The Warriors recovered another fumble on the following Tiger drive that led to another score.
The Tigers tried to get something going when Williams found Dexter Holloway on a screen pass that led to a 50-yard gain. Warrior Marcus Mayo ended Tiger hopes when he intercepted a Metter pass in the endzone.
With the score 52-6 and nothing left on the clock in the third quarter, Metter’s T.J. Dekle weaved in and out of Warrior defenders for an 87-yard kickoff return and the touchdown.
It was the first kickoff returned for a touchdown by a Tiger in the new Jungle and the second Metter score in the stadium.
Dekle wasn’t finished. With 5:07 left in the fourth quarter, he powered in for a 13-yard touchdown run to make the score 52-21.
Metter takes on Westside- Augusta next week.
