The Southeast Bulloch and Screven County softball teams advanced to the Elite Eight of the Georgia High School state softball tournament to be held in Columbus starting on Thursday.
The Yellow Jackets will face Greater Atlanta Christian while the Gamecocks draw Buford. Both schools are out of Gwinnett County and region 6-AA.
Southeast accomplished the feat by winning four straight games on Saturday at the Paulson Complex in Savannah. After an opening round loss Friday, SEB beat Fitzgerald, Dodge County, Cook County and Pierce County on Saturday.
“We were exhausted,” said SEB head coach Aimee Civalier about going into the final game against Pierce. “But I told them we didn’t come this far to just give up and go home.”
The Jackets’ final win was a 3-0 beating of Pierce,  sending SEB to Columbus. They had beaten Fitzgerald 12-1, Dodge 1-0 and Cook 3-2 to make it into the final game of the day against a Purple Hurricane team who had played just once on Saturday.
Ciera Weaver scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning in the Dodge County win on a two-out passed ball.
Megan Barnwell pitched all but three innings for SEB, recording all four wins.
“Everybody did something to help us win,” said Civalier of her team’s performance. “We switched catchers around and changed defenses and did what we needed to do to win.”
Screven County went 3-1, beating Brantley County twice and Dodge County once.
The Elite Eight tournament is double-elimination with the champion to be crowned on Saturday starting at 11:30 a.m.
