PERRY — Screven County High junior Travis Coles won the all-classification state championship in the 191-205 pound weight class at the GACA State Weightlifting Championship Saturday.
He benched 335 pounds, squatted 500 pounds and recorded 275 pounds in the power clean. He’s been the Gamecocks starting fullback the last two years and has rushed for more 1,000 yards each of those seasons. Screven’s Michael Johnson, the starting quarterback, finished seventh in the 150-160 weight class.
Shehan gets second straight SoCon honor
For the second consecutive week, Georgia Southern’s Chris Shehan was named the Southern Conference’s baseball player of the week. Shehan led the Eagles to a 4-0 mark last week, including a sweep to start league play.
Shehan hit .579 (11 of 19) over the past four contests with seven runs scored and 11 RBI. He posted a .842 slugging and .636 on-base percentage. Shehan recorded nine of his 11 RBI against Western Carolina, batting .643 in the sweep of the Catamounts. He hit his second career grand slam and scored six run in the series. During game two he drove in a career-high seven runs.
Overall the junior right fielder leads the Eagles (14-8 overall, 3-0 SoCon) with: a .466 batting average, 33 runs scored, nine doubles, nine home runs, 37 RBI, .898 slugging percentage, 19 walks and .577 on-base percentage.
Georgia Southern will take the week off before resuming SoCon play at the College of Charleston this weekend. First pitch on Friday night is scheduled for 6 p.m.
Blue Devil soccer sweeps on the road
AUGUSTA — The Statesboro High girls soccer team won 2-1 at Richmond Academy Monday. Kate Brunson and Kelly Harris scored for the Devils (2-7-2), while Whitney Lucas recorded 12 saves.
The Blue Devil boys also won, picking up a 5-1 victory to improve to 2-4 in Region 3-AAAA. Erik Quiterio scored twice for SHS while Lindsey Martin, Kyle Francis and Kelly Dessommes added one goal each.
Statesboro travels to Lakeside today with the girls game beginning at 5:30 p.m. and the boys to follow.
SEB tennis sweeps Bryan County
BROOKLET — Southeast Bulloch’s tennis team picked up a non-region sweep against Bryan County Monday.
The SEB girls won 5-0 to improve to 3-4 overall (1-1 Region 3-AA). Winners were: No. 1 singles — Shelby Forhand (6-3 6-5), No. 2 singles — Victoria Herndon (6-1, 6-0), No. 3 singles — Jordan Sherrod (6-0, 6-0), No. 1 doubles — Sarah Burkhart/Caitlin Brannen (6-1, 6-1) and No. 2 doubles — Sarah Waters/Emily McGuire (6-1, 6-0).

BROOKLET — The Southeast Bulloch girls soccer team fell to Savannah Country Day 4-0 at home Monday. Kacey Jones recorded 16 saves for the Yellow Jackets (6-3, 0-3 Area 3 A/AA), who host Savannah Christian at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

The Bulloch Academy girls’ junior varsity track team took second in a five-team meet last week at Gator Alley.
William James Middle School won the meet with 126 points while the Lady Gators netted 97. Robert Toombs was third with 68 points. In the boys’ meet, a depleted Gator squad (conflict with junior varsity baseball game) was fourth. William James Middle School won the boys’ meet with 195 points.
In the girls’ meet, BA’s Taylor Collins won the high jump and the 400-meters. She also ran a leg on the winning 1600m relay team with Maddie Manack, Anna Newton and Emily Morgan.
Collins had a second-place finish in the 200m nd Haley Burke was second in the 1600m.
Bulloch Academy travels to Lyons Thursday to participate in a multi-team meet at Robert Toombs Christian Academy.

Georgia Southern golf announces the annual Pro-Am Golf Tournament to be played Monday, April 14th at Forest Heights Country Club in Statesboro.
The yearly event provides an opportunity for alumni, friends, businesses and the community to help support Eagle golf, with proceeds to benefit the program.
Participation in the tournament will come with the following benefits: green Fee and cart, Georgia Southern golf shirt, meet the team, refreshments on the course, dinner and refreshments after play, raffle gifts and awards for the winning teams.
Forest Heights Country Club is the premier golf facility in the area with a maximum capacity of 120 golfers at any one time. The tournament is open to all.

GSU soccer clinic
Georgia Southern men’s soccer will host a free soccer clinic for boys and girls ages 4-14, Saturday at the Eagle Soccer Field.
The free clinic will begin at 3:30 p.m. and is open to all girls and boys ages 4-14. To register for free, contact Tarren Hill at (912) 478-1500, or at thill22@georgiasouthern.edu.
The clinic will be preceded earlier in the day by three scrimmages between the Eagles, Lander and Savannah College of Art & Design with the first scrimmage starting at 11 a.m. between GSU and Lander. Following will be Lander vs. SCAD at 12:30 p.m., and then the Eagles will battle SCAD at 2 p.m.
