Tess Fordham of Metter shot a 71 Monday to win the Region 3-AA girls’ golf championship.
Fordham helped the Lady Tigers to a first place finish (157), beating out Laney (190) and Southeast Bulloch (204). Three other schools participated but did not qualified.
In the boys’ competition, Westside shot a 295 to win. Dykes Harvin shot a 72 and won on a playoff to claim the individual title. Jefferson County (342) came in second followed by Southeast Bulloch (375).
Jordan Smith shot a 82, Conner Reames a 84, Robert Fields a 100 and Marlon Eller a 104 for SEB. Kirsten Smith shot a 97 and Lindsey Shackelford a 107 for the Lady Jackets.
The top two teams in each event will go to the state championship on May 5. The girls will be in Dawsonville while the bys will head to Rome.

VIDALIA — The Statesboro baseball team dropped its regular season finale, 13-3 Monday at Vidalia in five innings.
The Blue Devils (10-11) will travel to Wayne County for the first round of the Region 3-AAAA playoffs on Friday for a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. The Yellow Jackets are the No. 1 seed out of 3-AAAA South.

THOMASVILLE — The Statesboro boys’ soccer team was eliminated from the GHSA Class AAAA state playoffs, falling 1-0 at Thomas County Central Monday.
The Yellow Jackets scored on a penalty kick with about 10 minutes to go, then held on to advance to the second round.
The Blue Devils end their season at 9-11.

FLORENCE, S.C. — Freshman Logan Blondell matched the day’s third-lowest round (-3) in the second day of the Southern Conference Championship, Monday, played at the par-72, 7,062-yard Country Club of South Carolina in Florence, S.C.
The Eagles improved upon yesterday’s team performance by nine strokes, but still dropped one spot into eighth place on the team leaderboard after shooting a 7-over 295, while Wofford moved ahead of the Eagles by four strokes.
After shooting a day-low 7-under, No. 17 Chattanooga leads the 10-team field at 5-under 571. College of Charleston sits in second place, eight strokes behind the Mocs at 3-over 579, while the rest of the field holds double-figure scores over par.
Starting on the back nine tied for 34th place, Blondell (Lakeland, Fla.) finished the day carding six birdies, including four consecutive on holes five through eight. He jumped up 20 spots to end the day tied for 14th place with seven others.
Pacing the individual field is Chattanooga’s Ben Rickett at 3-under 141. He holds a one-stroke lead over Western Carolina’s Matt Cook in second place at 2-under 142.
Junior Drew Lethem (Camdenton, Mo.) shot a 2-over 74 for a two-day total of 5-over 149 and a tie for 22nd place. Freshman Joe Monte (Chantilly, Va.) shot a 5-over on the day, bringing his two-day score to 9-over 153.
Junior Jordan Johnstun (Evans, Ga.) improved his first-round score, shooting a 3-over on the day to head into Tuesday’s final round at 10-over 154. Sophomore Spencer Fulford (Rocky Mount, N.C.) shot a 6-over 78 on the day and joins teammate Johnstun tied for 36th place.
The third and final round tee times for the Eagles begin at 8:40 a.m., today.

PORTAL — The Portal and Southeast Bulloch junior varsity baseball teams split a doubleheader on Monday.
The Panthers won the first game 5-4. Corey Deloach went 1-for-2 and was the winning pitcher for PHS. Jordan Dampier was 3-for-4 with 3 runs and an RBI, Bart Dutton was 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs and Garrett Hodges and Chad Busby were both 1-for-3 for the Panthers.
In the second game, SEB won 7-0. Hodges went 1-for-2 for PHS.
Portal host Calvary Day today beginning at 4 p.m. with the varsity’s Senior Night to follow against the first-place Cavaliers.
Million dollar shootout this week
Hacker’s Golf Park will hold its annual fund-raising event this weekend — the Million Dollar Shootout.
Starting on Wednesday and running through Saturday, golfers will have a shot to make a hole-in-one from 6-10 p.m. and 1-6 p.m. on Saturday.
The Top Ten closest shots by 6 p.m. Saturday will qualify for Saturday’s championship round which begins at 7 p.m. Best shots will not roll over from day-to-day. A hole-in-one Saturday night wins one million dollars.
One ball is $5 and five balls are $20 with proceeds going to the Family Skills Center. There will be prizes for the final Top Ten.
Splash to host Youth Triathlon
Splash in the Boro Family Waterpark and Aquatic Center will host the first Splashy’s Youth Triathlon on Sunday beginning at 2 p.m. inside Mill Creek Regional Park in Statesboro.
Boys and girls, ages 7 to 17, can compete in this triathlon. It is broken down into four age divisions to equalize the field while distances are adjusted to create a more safe and fun-filled experience.
Ages 7 to 9 will swim 50 yards, bike two miles and run1⁄2 mile. Ages 10 to 12 will swim 100 yards, bike two miles and run one mile. Ages 13 to 15 will swim 150 yards, bike 3.5 miles and run 11⁄2 miles. Ages 16 to 17 will Swim 200 yards, bike five miles and run 21⁄2 miles.
Triathlon’s incorporate swimming, biking, and running for a fun and exciting endurance race for all ages and skill levels. The swim portion will be held in the competition pool at Splash in the Boro, while the biking and running portions will be held inside Mill Creek Regional Park. The younger age group will start at 2 p.m. with each older age group going in order once the group before them are finished.
Registration for Splashy’s Youth Triathlon is being held at the Honey Bowen Building on Fair Road (M-F 8:30 a.m. - 6 p.m.), or online at www.splashintheboro.com. If there are still openings, race day registration will also be available between the hours of Noon and 1 p.m. only. Cost is $25 per athlete if registered by April 18. After this deadline, cost is $35 per athlete. There is a $5 discount for additional siblings. Participants will receive a gift bag, T-shirt, and be eligible for door prizes during the event.

Georgia Southern University head football coach Chris Hatcher and Southern Boosters will host the 2008 Georgia Southern University Savannah Area Golf Classic, Friday, May 9th. The event will be held at the Crosswinds Golf Club in Savannah. The golfing event will benefit Georgia Southern University's Football program.
The entry fee is $90 per player and includes a meal after the round and two drink tickets during the tournament. Hole sponsorships are available for $100. Signs acknowledging the sponsor will be located on each tee box. Tee-time is 1:00 pm. Awards and Coach Hatcher's remarks will be held at the conclusion.
Players of all skill levels are welcome to participate in this event. The captain's choice format will begin with a shotgun start at 1 p.m.
