The Georgia Southern women’s soccer team announces the 2008 schedule which is highlighted by a pair of early tournaments, four 2007 NCAA tournament contenders, first-time opponents and familiar Southern Conference foes.
The Eagles will start off the 19-game, 2008 campaign on the road in a first-ever clash with Gardner-Webb of the Atlantic Sun Conference. The game in Shelby, N.C. will commence a spell of six consecutive road games that will challenge the Eagles immediately.
As part of the road swing, the Eagles take flight outside of the region to the Midwest where they will battle Northern Iowa and Northern Illinois in the NIU Tournament, August 29-31, in DeKalb, Ill.
The following week, the Eagles will return back to the South for another tournament. Georgia Southern will face Charleston Southern and tournament host Coastal Carolina, Sep. 5-7.
Last year, Coastal Carolina played eventual tournament champion High Point to a scoreless tie in the Big South tournament, but fell 5-3 in penalty kicks.
Georgia Southern will then travel to Macon to face in-state foe Mercer (Sep. 12) before playing host for the first time of the new season in a two-game homestand. The Eagles will entertain Georgia State (Sep. 19) and 2007 Big South tournament champion and NCAA contender High Point (Sep. 21) at Eagle Field.
The Eagles will then hit the road to finally open up Southern Conference action, first off against Wofford (Sep. 26), then at defending 2007 SoCon tournament champion Furman (Sep. 28).
Georgia Southern will return back to Statesboro to play host to Chattanooga (Oct. 3) and SoCon newcomer, Samford (Oct. 5).
The Eagles will then make a brief road trip to The Citadel (Oct. 10) before returning back to Eagle Field for a three-game homestand versus College of Charleston (Oct. 12), Western Carolina (Oct. 17) and Appalachian State (Oct. 19).
With the addition of Samford to the conference, the number of teams increases to 12, which makes for easier travelling and less time on the road.
The Eagles will hit the road once more, facing 2007 regular season champion UNC Greensboro (Oct. 24) and Elon (Oct. 26) before concluding the regular season versus Davidson back home on Eagle Field (Oct. 30).
Devils win second straight
The Statesboro boys’ soccer team beat the Academy of Richmond County 5-1 on Thursday.
Trent Doty scored twice for the Blue Devils (5-6, 1-4 Region 3-AAAA). Lindsey Martin, Jack O’Malley and Graden Bozeman added a goal each.
Statesboro will be in action on Monday at Lakeside.
SEB beats Irish
DUBLIN — The Southeast Bulloch girls soccer team beat Dublin Thursday night 1-0.
Brittany Hood scored on an assist from Ashlin Reid for the winner. Kacey Jones had the shutout in goal with five saves.
Southeast will host Savannah Country Day at 5:30 p.m. on Monday.
Gators top DEA
STILLMORE — Bulloch Academy topped David Emanuel Academy 9-6 on Thursday.
Matt Simons was the winning pitcher, throwing a complete game.
Drew Cheshire was credited with the game-winning RBI to give BA (4-3) a 7-6 lead. Eli Strickland then singled home two in the seventh to give the Gators some breathing room.
Win Lee went 2-for-4 with a home run, Jordan Walker went 3-for-4 and Ethan Lovett was 2-for-4.
The Gators will be home on Tuesday to face Trinity Christian at 4 p.m.
Screven tops Jefferson
SYLVANIA — The Screven County girls soccer team beat Jefferson County in the 77th minute Tuesday on a goal by Gentri Becton.
Rochelle Shuman had the assist on the goal, helping SCHS improve to 7-2.
The Lady Gamecocks are at Calvary Day Tuesday at 5 p.m.
SEB soccer falls to Vidalia
VIDALIA — The Southeast Bulloch boys’ soccer team lost to Vidalia on Wednesday. Ian Foster had the hat trick for the Jackets, which brings his season total to 10 goal.
The SEB boys junior varsity finished it's inaugural season with a 4-0 win over Vidalia. It was the first win for the JV in the program's first season. Joel Rubio, Brent LeBlanc, Josh T. Davis and Nick Flott each added a goal for the Jackets. The defense was anchored by Ryan Howell and Kirk Brown.
SEB returns to the field next week and will take on Savannah Christian, Metter, and Savannah Country Day.
Screven tennis sweeps Jefferson
SYLVANIA — The Screven County tennis teams swept matches Thursday against Region 3-AA foe Jefferson County.
In the boys’ match, the Gamecocks won 5-0 and improved to 7-5 and 3-0.
Eric Boddiford (6-0, 6-0), Jim Freeman (6-0, 6-0) and Hunter Sommers (6-0, 6-0) all won in singles play. Eddie Waters and Murphy Frankhouser (6-2, 6-3) won in doubles, as did Zachary Parker and Grant Tripplett (6-0, 6-0).
The Lady Gamecocks (10-2, 3-0) won each match by a 6-0, 6-0 score. Kate Blackburn, Kathryn Well and Evan Blackburn won in singles play.
The doubles team of Carter Mills and Missy Zeagler won along with Hillary Chance and Lauryn Bazemore.
Screven will host Lakeside of Evans on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
Metter soccer wins first
METTER — The Metter boys soccer team got its first win of the season Thursday, beating East Laurens 4-2.
Javier Escalona scored twice for the Tigers (1-4) while Jose Recendiz and Omar Bautista added one each.
The Metter girls team (0-6) fell 1-0 on a goal just after halftime.
Both squads will be back in action tonight, traveling to East Laurens.
SEB Middle track and field results
The Southeast Bulloch Middle school girls’ and boys’ track teams defeated Langston Chapel and Screven County Middle School on Wednesday.
In the long jump, Jasmine Roberts won second place with a jump of 13-11.
In the discus, Emily Herndon won the event with a throw of 73-5. Naomi Cook came in second (65-6). Ian Price was first in the boys’ event (118-9) and Mitchell Duke was second (109-3).
In the shot put Herndon won first (29-9). Price was second for the boys (35-6).
In the triple jump, Nira Byrd won with a jump of 29-8. Breanna Gates was second (27-11). In the boys’ event Anthony Gardner was in first place with a jump of 32-1,
In the high jump, Katie Nevil won with a 4-6. Jamal Johnson won the boys’ event at 5-feet.
In the 400m, Kerriyanna Wimberly ran a 66.70 for first in the girls’ race. Gardner won the boys’ event with a 58.00 Josh Collins was second with a 59.47
In the 1600m , Blake Price was first at 6:13 and Nick Knight was second (6:15).
In the 400-meter relay, Gates, Nevil, Wimberly and Byrd ran a 53.80 to take home first. In the boys’ race, Gardner, Collins, Johnson and Jartavis Smith took home first at 49 seconds.
In the 100-meters, Byrd came in second (13.04) in the girls’ race and Smith was second in the boys’ event (11.90).
In the girls’ 100m low hurdles, Philicia Batton was second with a 19.23.
In the 800m Hannah Bunch ran a 3:13 to win the girls’ event. Knight was second in the boys’ race (3:32).
In the 200m, Nevil was first with a 27.80. Gardner placed second in the boys’ race with a 26.06.
In the 3200m, Savannah Morris was second with a 16:32. Blake Price won the event for the boys at 13.39 and Adam Bowen was second (14:02).
In the 1600m relay, Gates, Jasmine Roberts, Nevil and Wimberly won the girls’ race (5:11).
The Coastal Empire Middle School Region track meet will be held at Southeast Bulloch High School on Saturday, March 29. Field Events will begin at 10:00 am.
Subway Local Track Meet
The Statesboro-Bulloch County Parks and Recreation Department and Subway will host a local track meet for ages 7 to 14 on Saturday at the Georgia Southern University track and field complex. Check-in will be from 7:45 - 8:45 a.m. on the day of the meet, followed by a 9 a.m. start.
The meet is free for all participants and will consist of track and field events including the 50-meters, 100-meters, 200-meters, 400-meters, 800-meters, 1600- meters, standing long jump, running long jump, high jump, softball throw and shot put.
The 1600m, the 50m preliminary and the 100m preliminary will run at 9 a.m. followed by the field events. Around 11:15 a.m., the running events will continue.
Students who are currently participating in a school track program are not eligible to participate in the Subway Local Track Meet.
For those who qualify, a district track meet will take place on April 19.

GSU soccer clinic
Georgia Southern men’s soccer will host a free soccer clinic for boys and girls ages 4-14, Saturday, March 29 at the Eagle Soccer Field.
The free clinic will begin at 3:30 p.m. and is open to all girls and boys ages 4-14. To register for free, contact Tarren Hill at (912) 478-1500, or at thill22@georgiasouthern.edu.
The clinic will be preceded earlier in the day by three scrimmages between the Eagles, Lander and Savannah College of Art & Design with the first scrimmage starting at 11 a.m. between GSU and Lander. Following will be Lander vs. SCAD at 12:30 p.m., and then the Eagles will battle SCAD at 2 p.m.
