Local Roundup: Lady Devils, Screven County boys advance to state

   The Statesboro High girls’ basketball team secured a trip to the state playoffs with a 52-49 win at Ware County in Region 3-AAAA tournament action Tuesday. Gwennetta Jones led the Lady Devils with 16 points, while Victoria Mikell added 14 and Monnette Bennett scored 11. SHS continues tournament play at Richmond Academy on Friday against an opponent to be determined.

Screven boys win sixth straight
    The Screven County boys' basketball team beat Jefferson County, 76-55, Tuesday in the region 3-AA tournament at Josey to secure its first trip to the state playoffs since 1995. The win was the Gamecock's (14-12) sixth in a row, marking the first time since 1994-1995 they've won six straight.
    Dajuwan Carter (18 points, 10 rebounds) and Matt Taylor (15 pts and five rbs) both posted double-doubles, while Antrjuan Albright added 18 points for Screven, which will face Swainsboro in the tournament semifinals Friday at 8:30 p.m.
    The Screven girls begin region tournament play today in Josey, facing Jefferson County for a 7 p.m. game.

SEB boys fall,
end season
    The Southeast Bulloch boys' basketball team fell to Swainsboro, 67-37, in the first round of the region 3-AA tournament Tuesday at Josey to end the Yellow Jackets' season. James Scott scored 11 to lead SEB, while Chris Rogers added 10 and Keith Ross and Tony Raymond had eight apiece. SEB trailed 16-9 after one quarter, 28-15 after two and 47-24 at the end of the third.

EBA, FA advance in BA tourney
    The Edmund Burke girls and the Frederica boys won Tuesday’s opening games of the GISA Region 2-AA basketball tournament at Bulloch Academy.
    The Lady Spartans (6-12) held off Memorial Day School 47-40 to end the Lady Matadors’ season. Katie Kittrell scored 14 points for EBA while Kayla Milligan added 13. Memorial’s Kristin Smith had a game-high 20 points. Edmund Burke advances to play top-seeded Trinity Christian School Friday at 4 p.m.
    In the boys’ game, Frederica Academy downed Edmund Burke 48-34. Grayson Mitchell led the Knights (4-19) with 19 points while Adam Higgins added 10. Jeremy Hayes led EBA with 10. Frederica advances to play top-seeded Bulloch Academy Friday at 5:30 p.m.
    In other games Friday, the Bulloch Academy girls take on Frederica at 7 p.m. while Memorial Day School and Trinity Christian square off in boys’ action at 8:30 p.m.  

Yellow Jackets
named All-Region
    Southeast Bulloch offensive lineman Eddie Beasley was named to the All-Region 3-AA first team, while second-team honors went to offensive lineman Scotty Beegle, linebacker Josh Ward and defensive back Greg Wright. Honorable Mentions included: defensive lineman Davey Saxon, running back Richard Johnson, offensive lineman Mark Beasley  and linebacker Kyle Greathouse.

Recreation league hoops scores
    Statesboro-Bulloch County Parks & Recreation youth basketball scores are as follows: In games played on Feb. 6 in the Tiny Minor Girls league, the Fever beat the Storm, 36-12, and the Mercury edged out the Mystic, 31-28.
    A game was forfeited between the Lynx and the Sting, resulting in an automatic score of 7-0.
    On Feb. 7 in the Midget Boys league, the Celtics beat the Lakers 29-18, and the Hawks topped the Bobcats, 31-12.
    In games played on Feb. 8 in the Tiny Minor Girls league, the Fever beat the Sparks, 28-18, and the Mercury beat the Storm, 20-8. In the final match-up, the Lynx topped the Mystic, 15-13.
    In the Minor Boys league's Feb. 8 games, the Mavs narrowly beat out the Rockets, 30-28. The Sixers topped the Clippers, 46-12, and the Knicks beat the Cavs, 25-14. Finally, the Nuggets scored 38 to the Lakers' 33 for the win.

SHS soccer
suspended
    The Lady Blue Devils’ soccer match with Richmond Hill was suspended Tuesday night due to inclement weather after playing to a 1-1 draw through one half.
    Laura Nunnery scored for the Lady Wildcats on a penalty kick in the ninth minute after SHS was called for a handball inside the penalty box. Statesboro didn’t answer until the 36th minute when Kelly Harris put home a rebound attempt to tie the score at one.
    The boys match between the two schools was suspended indefinitely and will be rescheduled.
    Statesboro will try a second time to begin its season when they boys travel to Rockdale County Friday at 7:30 p.m. The Lady Devils will welcome Southeast Bulloch Friday at 6 p.m.
    
SEB soccer ties Liberty County
    The Southeast Bulloch girls' soccer team played Liberty County to a 2-2 tie on the road Tuesday in the Yellow Jackets season opener. Morgan Jones and Sarah Keen scored SEB's two goals, and the game was shortened due to thunderstorms. The Jackets host Screven County Thursday with the JV girls' game slated for 4:30 p.m. and the varsity girls beginning at 6 p.m.
