AUGUSTA — Statesboro senior Monnette Bennett hit the game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer and scored 23 points to lift the Lady Blue Devils to a 43-40 victory at Lakeside Friday night.
Statesboro’s boys also won, picking up a 54-45 victory thanks to Eric Ferguson’s 27 points and 10 rebounds.
Mario Jackson added 13 points and five rebounds while JaQwan Raymond scored 10 points for the Devils (11-9, 5-1).
Statesboro hosts Evans for Senior Night tonight.
Laney sweeps Screven County
SYLVANIA — Laney’s girls team hit 3 of 4 free throws in last minute to hold on for a 45-43 win at Screven County Friday.
Artavia Zeigler had a team-high 16 points for the Lady Gamecocks (17-6, 9-3) and Bria Lonon added 11 points and nine rebounds.
Earlier this season, Laney (18-3, 11-0) beat the Gamecocks by 21 points.
In the boys game, Dajuwan Carter scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, but the Gamecocks fell 58-49.
Screven (16-7, 8-4) held the lead from early in the second quarter until the :58 mark in the third when Laney regained the lead at 35-34. The Gamecocks pulled within 43-42 with 3:22 to go but never got back on top.
Screven is off until next Friday when the Gamecocks travel to Southeast Bulloch. They conclude the regular season with a Feb. 9 trip to Josey for a makeup game.
ECI girls win at Claxton
CLAXTON — Lacreasha Brewton scored a game-high 21 points for Claxton, which fell to Emanuel County Institute 60-41 at home Friday.
Jameshia Gunn (16 points),
Valese McAllister (14) and Tekerra Branch (14) led ECI in scoring. Kris Johnson scored eight for the Lady Tigers (3-20, 2-8), who travel to Jenkins County tonight.
