Jeremy Mincey is coming home.
Saturday, at noon, the NFL star will return to Statesboro's Luetta Moore Park to host a free picnic and barbeque in an effort to give back to the community that helped him become what he is today.
“When you come back home and talk to people you see reality — the real world,” said Mincey. “They give you a better understanding of what’s going on. It’s the bigger picture for me. When I come home I re-focus myself a lot. I make sure I get home enough to keep that focus.”
Comedians, musicians and stars from all over the NFL are expected to be in attendance at the all-day event which kicks off with a celebrity basketball game.
“It just going to be a big ol’ cookout for the community,” he said. “I’m just giving availability for everyone just have the chance to see some of their favorite NFL players — just to put them in this type of atmosphere gives people hope. When you see stuff like that you want to become that.”
Mincey added that anyone and everyone is invited to the event and are also welcome to bring their own grills and food.
“I can’t feed everybody,” he laughed. “It’s just a mindset for everyone to say, ‘Hey I can bring my grill and cook out here with my family along with all these people.’ Everyone’s welcome to do that.”
Mincey graduated from Statesboro High School in 2001 and attended the University of Florida after junior college. Mincey was a team captain for the Gators and was named second team All-Southeastern Conference. He was drafted in 2006 (191st overall) and is currently at linebacker for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
