BROOKLET — The Southeast Bulloch Yellow Jackets (8-10) were off from behind the arc in the first half, but the play underneath was enough to compensate as SEB cruised to an 85-66 victory over visiting Jenkins County Tuesday.
“We tried to take a couple of (3-pointers) early on to try and draw them out, but when you don’t make them, it’s a little bit harder,” said Yellow Jackets coach John Page. “We knew we could get the ball inside when we wanted to. We got it to James (Scott) on the baseline and then we kind of ducked it in to Chris (Rogers) a few times, so we got everything we wanted to get on the inside, but we’ve still got work to do.”
The lead changed hands three times in the first quarter, but the Jackets were able to finish with a 17-11 run to end the period with a 23-16 lead, looking underneath to Rogers, Scott and Tony Raymond. The lead was widened to 17 with the aid of a 9-of-13 performance from the charity stripe in the second.
The Eagles were able to hold SEB to a 10-point third quarter where they closed the gap to 57-43, but a 28-point fourth sealed the win for the Yellow Jackets.
Southeast Bulloch got points from 10 different players in the contest.
“We got a lot of points, and we got another chance to get a lot of guys some playing time, too,” said Page. “I was pleased to get some other guys in and get them some time to play. That’s always good to keep morale up.”
Jenkins County had trouble in-bounding the ball, and SEB took advantage of 19 steals from its defense to keep the ball on its side of the court.
“We were just trying to get pressure on the ball out of bounds and try to make them have to make passes in,” said Page. “Our guys did a good job of rotating and being in the right spaces. That gave us some opportune shots.”
Scott led the Jacket offense with 22 points and added 10 rebounds, and Raymond netted 21. Arsenio Wright and Anthony Cope each added nine for Southeast Bulloch.
The Eagles were led offensively by Akeem Young (25 points), big-man Tyrone Brown (16) and Tim Patterson (15).
Southeast Bulloch returns to action on Friday when it heads to Josey — the top team in Region 3-AA. The girls tip off at 6 p.m. and the boys will follow.

Lady Jackets 38
The Jenkins County Lady Eagles (4-14) were led by the post play of Toshe McClain as they pulled away in the fourth quarter and knocked off the Southeast Bulloch Lady Jackets (7-11) 55-38 in a non-region matchup Tuesday night.
McClain’s double-double led the game with 17 points and 15 rebounds, and the Jackets could not find an answer.
“(McClain)’s our go-to person, especially on offense,” said Jenkins coach Randy Cooper. “She’s been playing great lately, so we just want to keep that going.”
Southeast Bulloch got on the board first — on a Crystal Mikell jumper — but never led from that point on.
The Lady Eagles jumped ahead 13-7 after a quarter of play, and extended the lead to eight when they hit the locker room leading 22-14.
The Jackets came out of the gates aggressively in the third, out-rebounding BCHS 12-5 in the period and closing the gap to 33-30, led by Christina Finnegan who knocked down six of her eight points in the rally.
“In the third quarter, we were picking up the pressure in the right spots,” said SEB coach Mark Smith. “We forced them to do some things. In the fourth, we got it off and on. We weren’t as consistent, and they made some adjustments.”
The Jackets saw their efforts slip away in the fourth when they were out-scored 22-8 to close out the game.
Nicole Smith added 11 points to McClain’s 17 for the Eagles, and Zandra Lake added 10.
Mikell led Southeast Bulloch with 13 points, and fellow freshman Olivia Melvin added 11 points and seven steals. Ashley Clifton led the Yellow Jacket defense with 10 rebounds.
