BROOKLET — The Southeast Bulloch Yellow Jackets look to build on the performance of quarterback Joe Wilson after the loss in Swainsboro on Friday, Sept. 21 and put together an offensive show for a crowd of students and alumni during tonight’s homecoming game against Region 3-AA foe Westside at Fred Shaver Field.
Being homecoming week, things around the practice field have gotten a bit distracting, so coach John Kenny has made sure to keep his team focused.
“Tuesday during practice, there were some distractions, with homecoming this week,” said Kenny, “but (Wednesday) we (were) a little more focused.”
Returning to the lineup for the Jackets is running back Tharon Davis, who was sidelined against Swainsboro due to a shoulder injury. His absence did not go un-noticed. The SEB running game was held to practically nothing, with fullback Deion Evans the only runner in positive yardage.
Davis has reached the end zone four times so far this season for the Jackets (1-3, 0-1) and the team is glad to have him back.
“We missed (Davis) last week,” said Wilson. “It’s great to have him back this week. We did a good job last week, but we need Tharon back there and it’s great to have him back.”
Davis is just happy to be back in the backfield.
“I’m really glad to be back,” said Davis. “Seeing as how I missed a lot of things last Friday, I’m going to come out here and make up for what I missed… I’m going to give 100 percent as always. I’ve got to motivate my team.”
Westside will defend SEB’s spread offense with a 50-style defense, something the Jackets have seen before.
Much like in the Swainsboro game, WHS will try to stop the run first and make Southeast Bulloch throw the football. The goal of the SEB offense will be to establish the running game with Davis and Evans to allow more freedom for Wilson.
Offensively, the Patriots (1-3, 0-1) will focus on the ground attack.
Running out of the I-formation, Westside will run some option, mixed in with some more standard iso and misdirection plays.
Southeast has seen it’s share of option this season, primarily against Portal and Toombs County — both running with one man in the backfield and two backs in the slots — but the I-formation will give the Jackets a different look.
Kenny expects a large crowd for the homecoming event, and looks forward to showing it what his team can do with his new offensive system.
“I look forward to seeing all of the alumni (tonight),” said the coach.
Both teams are 0-1 in the region, so it will be a statement game for one of the squads.
Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.
