JC promotes Waters to interim coach
MILLEN (GHSFD) — Jenkins County promoted defensive coordinator Charlie Waters to be the interim coach this week while Chris Mason recovers from a stroke suffered on June 21.
Mason will remain on staff and continue to help with the offense, Waters told GHSF Daily on Thursday.
"Coach Mason is going to be an assistant until he's back well enough to take that head role, and I'm going to be the interim," Waters said. "The players have handled it real well. Coach Mason had come in with a new offense [a one-back spread], and we're just going to keep learning it as best we can."
Mason was hired in the spring from McIntosh County Academy, where he was the offensive coordinator. He returned from the stroke to help with summer workouts but continues to undergo speech therapy three times a week, according to athletics director Mark Whitt.
Jenkins County has two future Division I defensive linemen who have committed to Georgia in Jonathan Taylor and James DeLoach.
