The season opening contest for the Georgia Southern women’s soccer team against Winthrop was cancelled due to consistent lightning strikes in the area of Eagle Field.
At the time of the first delay, Georgia Southern was leading 1-0. Sara Oland found the back of the net on an assist by Danae Kaimuloa. The junior beat a sliding Sarah Schippers, the Winthrop goalkeeper, bouncing the ball off Schippers legs for the score in the fourth minute.
With 18:45 left in the first half, the game was stopped for lightning. The game was delayed for over two hours before the decision was made to cancel. The game is not considered official because it did not reach the required 70 minute mark. No makeup date has been scheduled.
The Eagles will travel to Macon to take on Mercer Sunday, Aug. 22 at 2 p.m.

BA softball rained out
Lightning and the threat of severe weather cancelled Friday's Class AAA clash between Bulloch Academy and Mount de Sales of Macon.
In the top of the first inning, MDS's Madi Harrington singled to left field and Liza Hardison reached on an error before officials halted play at approximately 4:26 p.m. due to lightning. Both teams waited with hopes of resuming play but the lightning and threating conditions persisted. A break in the weather at 5:59 p.m. put the players back on the field to warm up but the girls were ordered off again at 6:10 p.m. At 6:30, the contest was officially cancelled.
"We really wanted to play them because we have already played Westfield and Stratford and it would have given us a picture of their region (2-AAA)," said BA head coach Chandler Dennard.
Thursday, the Lady Gators boosted their record to 6-2 with a 5-3 victory over Briarwood Academy in Warrenton. Freshman Madelyn Vickery got the win while sophomore Lauren Dennard got the save. Sophomore Ally Cheshire led Bulloch, going 2-for-4 with two RBI. Sophomore Maddie Marsh was 1-for-3 with two RBI.
