LUBBOCK, Texas — Voting has begun for the 2011 National College Baseball Hall of Fame class and former Georgia Southern coach Jack Stallings is one of 10 finalists in the coaches group.
    The new members of the Hall of Fame will be announced in mid-February once all the ballots have been tallied. If Stallings is selected, he will join former Mississippi State and GSU coach Ron Polk.
    Stallings compiled a 1,255-799-10 record in a combined 39 seasons at Wake Forest, Florida State and Georgia Southern. The 18th-winningest coach in college baseball history, he compiled an 858-581-5 record in 24 seasons with the Eagles.
    Stallings holds the GSU record for most wins and years coached. A 2004 inductee into the Georgia Southern Hall of Fame, he was honored the following year by having the field at J.I. Clements Stadium named after him.
    The voting panel is composed of approximately 190 members. It is comprised of national and regional college baseball media, active and retired coaches and media. Past College Baseball Hall of Fame inductees also vote.
    The induction of this year's class will take place in conjunction with the College Baseball Awards show July 3 in Lubbock, Texas.

Murray leads Claxton to win over SEB
    CLAXTON — The Claxton Lady Tigers (8-14, 4-6 Region 3E-A) defeated Southeast Bulloch's Lady Yellow Jackets 51-47 Friday night.
    Polly Murray led Claxton with 14 points, 20 rebounds, 9 steals and 7 assists. Devona Bruton also scored 14 points.
    Crystal Mikell led the Yellow Jackets with 15 points, while Chelsea Oglesby scored 13.
    The game ended the regular season for both teams. The regional tournaments are slated for next week.

Claxton defeats SEB
    CLAXTON — The Tigers defeated Southeast Bulloch 66-47 Friday night.
    Leading scorers for SEB were Devonte Tremble with 11 points and Jamal Johnson with 10 points.
    The Region 3-AA tournament begins on Monday. 

GSU tennis has busy weekend
    The Georgia Southern Eagles' tennis team (2-1) will play two matches this weekend. The Eagles travel to Deland, Fla., for a 10 a.m. match with Stetson today and return to Statesboro to host Hampton at 2 p.m. Sunday.
    “All the way through the lineup, I think everyone has had a good week of preparation,” stated Men's Tennis Head Coach Nick Zieziula. “We need everybody to continue to improve their singles play going into the weekend matches.”
    Georgia Southern has picked up the doubles point in all three of their matches this season. The number-one doubles team of Juan Manuel Melian Puigventos (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain) and Matthijs Verdam (Hilversum, Netherlands) are 3-0 this season. Three wins have also been produced out of the number-two doubles team of Alain Garrido (Vigo, Spain) and Marco Osorio (Tegucigalpa, Honduras).
    “We have focused a lot on doubles right from the start of our practices in January. I was very happy with the way things went in both of the doubles matches against Georgia State and we continued to improve things against Kennesaw State,” said Zieziula. “We have worked on it again this week, and I think its a big part of the foundation of what we do.”
    Puigventos is the only undefeated Eagle in singles play. He picked up the Georgia Southern's singles point at Georgia State last Saturday with a 6-0, 6-0 decision. The sophomore followed that up with a 6-2, 6-1 win over the Owl's Simon Janik on Sunday.
