    As announced Wednesday by the league office, Moriah Bellissimo has been named the Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for September 29.
    The sophomore helped lead the Georgia Southern Volleyball team to a 2-0 start in league play, defeating Wofford and Furman over the weekend.
    The Blackstone, Va., native collected 27 kills in 10 sets for a 2.70 kills per set average in the two matches. The middle hitter posted 14 kills against Wofford and 13 against Furman, while also registering 20 digs against the Terriers and 13 against the Paladins. Her 14 kills at Wofford marked a season-high and with double-doubles in both matches, the sophomore now has five on the season. In addition, Bellissimo had six blocks in the two matches.
    Bellissimo carries a 4.0 grade point average in nutrition/food science.
    Georgia Southern returns to the court and conference play welcoming Chattanooga to Hanner Fieldhouse on Saturday, October 2. Match time is slated for 6 p.m.

BA hosts Sherwood in tourney
    Bulloch Academy will host Sherwood Christian Academy Saturday in a best two-of-three series in first round of the GISA Class AAA fast-pitch softball playoffs.
    The Lady Gators (16-6) finished second in Region 4-AAA while Sherwood (14-7) was third in Region 3-AAA.
    Game time for the first contest is 10 a.m. while the second game should start around noon. A third game, if necessary, would start at 2 p.m.
    Admission is $6 for adults and $3 for students. No Bulloch Academy athletic department passes or faculty and staff passes are valid for post-season action. Only GISA passes, GAOA passes and media passes will be allowed.   

Georgia Fury starts up again
    The South Georgia Fury girls fastpitch travel softball organization is looking for new players aged 10-18 for the upcoming travel ball season.
    An intitial meeting and workout is scheduled for Sunday, October 3 from 2-4 p.m. at the Southeast Bulloch High School softball field.
    This workout will not serve as a tryout, but prospective players are asked to bring their gloves — as well as gear for girls wishing to play catcher — for fielding drills.
    Coaches will also be available for any questions that parents may have.

GSU XC preps for SoCon tourney
    Midway through its season, members of the Georgia Southern cross country team are pushing themselves to drop their times as they begin preparation for the Southern Conference Championship in late October. The Eagles travel to the Charlotte Invitational for a 4 p.m. race Friday and will compete against more than 25 other teams from the Southeast. UNC Charlotte plays host to the event at McAlpine Park where seven members of the team will compete in the 5,000 K event.
