3 Eagles earn preseason honors

    CLEVELAND, Ohio — Georgia Southern defensive lineman Brent Russell was named to Phil Steele’s Preseason FCS All-America second team as released by Steele's media organization.         Russell was the College Sporting News FCS Freshman of the Year for 2009 and was selected to the All-Southern Conference first team by the SoCon Sports Media Association at the end of the season.
    With a team-best 6.0 sacks, Russell was the second-highest-ranked freshman in the country in that category and tied for 53rd overall nationally. He finished the 2009 season with 48 tackles as well as three blocked kicks, one interception and one forced fumble.
    Russell was also selected to the organization’s 2010 preseason All-Southern Conference first team. Second-team selections on defense for Georgia Southern were junior defensive lineman Dion DuBose and junior defensive back Laron Scott.
    DuBose, who played at linebacker in 2009, was ranked ninth in tackles per game in the SoCon with 7.7 (85 total tackles, 48 solo, 37 assisted).         Scott was tied for second in the league in passes defended (8 passes broken up and 3 interceptions) and ranked seventh in interceptions.
    Steele’s College Football Preview included the FCS All-American and FCS All-Conference teams in its SEC/ACC/Big East Regional edition.

Three GSU golfers All-America scholars
    NORMAN, Okla. — Seniors Spence Fulford, Matt Deal and junior Logan Blondell were named to the Cleveland/Srixon All-America Scholars list, as announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America Monday. The Eagle trio joins 116 other Division I collegiate golfers in receiving the honor.
    Fulford, Blondell and Deal helped propel Georgia Southern to a tie with six other schools for the most players represented by a Division I collegiate golf program on the All-America Scholars list.
    Senior Spence Fulford earned this elite recognition for the second time in his collegiate golf career. Fulford earned the honor last year as a junior with a 3.61 GPA.
    Logan Blondell, a junior from Lakeland, Fla., earned the honor for the first time with a 3.56 GPA in finance and financial service.
    Also earning his first All-America Scholar honor was senior Matt Deal who boasted a 3.37 GPA in finance this year.

UGA suspends two after DUI
    ATHENS — Georgia coach Mark Richt has suspended two players the day after their arrests on alcohol-related charges.
    Sophomore tailback Dontavius Jackson was charged with driving under the influence, leaving the scene of an accident and other motor vehicle offenses early Saturday morning. Richt says Jackson, a backup, has been suspended for a minimum of six games.
    Sophomore split end Tavarres King, a returning starter, was charged with underaged possession of alcohol and has been suspended for at least one game by Richt.
    Richt says he is disappointed in the players' decision-making and that each will "pay a stiff price."
    Each player has been suspended indefinitely from all team activities.

GSU golf, strength camps cancelled
    Two upcoming camps at Georgia Southern have been cancelled for summer 2010. The Junior Golf camp and Strength and Speed camp will not be held on their originally scheduled dates. Details about possible future dates will be released when available.

GSU baseball camps
    Georgia Southern coach Rodney Hennon and the Eagles will host a pair of
baseball camps in July for children of all ages.
    Those aged 11-18 can sign up for the Eagle Overnight Camp from July 15-18.

    Georgia Southern men's soccer will host day camp from July 12-16 for $210 per camper and team and individual camp July 15-18. Prices range from $375-$525.
