Statesboro graduate Jeremy Mincey will host a free picnic/barbecue today at noon at Luetta Moore Park.
The event will include a celebrity basketball game and will end around 8 p.m.
Mincey is currently playing with the NFL’S Jacksonville Jaguars.
GSU golf heads to SoCon Championship
With the regular season under their belts, the Georgia Southern golf team is looking forward to the upcoming Southern Conference Championships, beginning Sunday, at the Country Club of South Carolina in Florence, S.C. The tournament will run from Sunday through Tuesday, with one round of 18 played each day.
Having finished among the top three in each of the last seven years, including winning the team titles in 2003 and 2006, the Eagles have their sights set on nothing less than their third league championship.
The tournament will feature a field of 10 SoCon schools, including Golfweek magazine’s No. 12 Chattanooga, Western Carolina (71), Furman (90), Georgia Southern (96), College of Charleston (97), Elon (124), UNC Greensboro (136), Wofford (177), Appalachian State (193) and Davidson (220).
Not only is a conference title on the line, but also an automatic bid to the NCAA Regional tournament — a place where the Eagles are also familiar, with nine team and individual regional appearances.
Representing the Blue and White at the tournament are juniors Jordan Johnstun (Evans, Ga.) and Drew Lethem (Camdenton, Mo.), sophomore Spencer Fulford (Rocky Mount, N.C.), and freshmen Logan Blondell (Lakeland, Fla.) and Joe Monte (Chantilly, Va.).

GSU men’s tennis ends season
CHARLESTON, S.C. — The Georgia Southern men’s tennis team suffered a tough loss in the second round of the Southern Conference Championships Friday afternoon. The seventh-seeded Eagles put up a close fight against the second-seeded Elon Phoenix, but fell 4-2. Georgia Southern wrapped up the 2008 season with a 9-13 overall record, 4-5 in conference play and 1-1 in tournament play. Meanwhile, Elon earned a spot in Saturday’s quarterfinals.
The Phoenix gained a 1-0 advantage heading into singles action with a doubles point capture. Wins at the one and three seeds secured the advantage for Elon. The Phoenix took an 8-3 win over Joris De Weerdt and Borja Malet at one, and an 8-4 decision at the three over Emmanuel Nkoueleue and Matthew Sands.
A victory from Sands at the six seed quickly evened the playing field in singles action. Sands defeated Chase Helpingstine in a 7-6, 6-2 fashion. Rebounding from a previous regular season singles loss to Oscar Podlewski, De Weerdt handled Podlewski this time at the two seed. De Weerdt ousted his opponent in straight 6-4 sets to notch the Eagles’ second team point. Despite the pressure and pushing two matches into third sets by the Eagles, Elon came out on top. Wins at the one, four and five seeds, plus the doubles point, secured the 4-2 victory for Elon.
The Eagles conclude the 2008 season with a 9-13 overall record, surpassing last year’s record tremendously, proving to be one of the best records in the program’s recent history.
In the first round GSU eliminated the No. 10 seed, UNC Greensboro, by a margin of 4-1 at the Farmfield Tennis Center Thursday afternoon.
Georgia Southern (9-12) jumped off to a 1-0 advantage with victories from the two and three seeds to claim the doubles team point heading into singles action; both matches ended in a 5-2 decision. Pairing up at the two spot, Nkoueleue and Sands downed Yaroslav Litus and Andrey Bubnov, while Philip Prins and Gregory Bekkers cruised past Taylor Befus and William John at the three seed.
To start off singles competition, UNC Greensboro evened the match at one-all with a quick victory at the one spot. However, taking three of six first sets was all the Ealges needed to carry the momentum over from doubles action. Securing the victory for the Eagles with wins at the three, five and six seeds were Borja Malet, Prins and Sands. Malet notched a 6-3,6-1 straight-set rebounding victory over Martin Redelinghuys at the three seed, while Prins cruised to a 6-2,6-1 win over William John at the five seed. Earning a three-set match at the six seed, Sands defeated Befus, 3-6,6-4,6-2, to clinch the match for Georgia Southern.

CHARLESTON, S.C. — The Georgia Southern women’s tennis team concluded its 2008 season on Friday afternoon, as the College of Charleston defeated the Eagles 4-0 in the second round of the Southern Conference Tournament, at the Farmfield Tennis Center in Charleston.
GSU finished the 2008 season with a .500 record, while the Cougars advance to Saturday’s semi-final round at the Earle Tennis Center.
Charleston captured the early advantage as the Cougars were successful at the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles positions. Georgia Southern’s No. 1 tandem of Kristi Kegerreis (Fairfax, Va.) and Christine Caforio (Acworth, Ga.) fought hard, but were edged 8-5 by Laura Borza and Link Leskosky. The Cougars clinched the doubles point as Chelsea Albertz and Anna Lee Evans were successful, 8-1, over juniors Jessica Matlosz (Alpharetta, Ga.) and Emma Knight (Duluth, Ga.).
In singles action, the Eagles gave the Cougars all they could handle, but couldn’t recover after giving up the early lead. The College of Charleston was victorious at seeds four though six, which gave them the match and propelled them to the semi-finals. GSU junior Shea Huxtable (Winter Springs, Fla.) fell in straight sets at the No. 6 slot to Amanda Becker by a 6-1, 6-1 decision. At the No. 4 position, Molly Maddox (Rome, Ga.) was defeated 6-3, 6-3 by Charleston’s Holly Dowse, while Caforio lost at the No. 5 seed 6-1, 6-1 to Evans. Kegerreis, Ali Beavers (Kingsport, Tenn.) and Melanie Rolle (Gainesville, Fla.) were all in the process of forcing a third set when the match was concluded.

AUGUSTA — The Southeast Bulloch baseball team pounded Josey 16-0 on Friday to improve to 7-4 in Region 3-AA.
Joseph Wilson allowed just one hit, striking out seven and faced one over the minimum in the five-inning game.
Tony Raymond was 3-for-4, Justin Daniels was 3-for-4 with a double and Casey Woodrum was 2-for-3 for SEB (12-9).
Every Yellow Jacket scored a run, got a hit or had an RBI in the win.
Southeast will host Jefferson County Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
Portal escapes Pembroke
PEMBROKE — Portal led an 11-4 lead slip away Friday, only to come away with a 12-11 win in eight innings at Bryan County.
Chad Busby got the win in relief for PHS (4-9, 4-7 Region 3-A). Brett Rivers was 4-for-4 with two RBIs and a triple, Luke Anderson was 2-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored and Mickey Williams was 2-for-5 with a run scored.
Derek Finch, Jordan Dampier and Nolan Clark each had a hit in the win.
The Panthers host Calvary Day on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Portal JV wins
PEMBROKE — The Portal junior varsity baseball team beat Bryan County 7-2.
Chad Busby got the win and was 1-for-4 with two RBIs.
Bart Dutton was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, Garrett Hodges was 3-for-4 with an RBI and Charlie Waters was 2-for-2 with two runs.
The Portal JV faces Southeast Bulloch on Monday.
Claxton blasts SCD
SAVANNAH — The Claxton baseball team improved to 17-2 with a 8-3 win over Savannah Country Day on Friday.
Harley Hendrix (8-0) pitched a complete game, striking out six and was 3-for-5 from the plate with a double.
Matt Rogers was 2-for-3 with a 3-run homer, Kelvin Goodson was 2-for-5 with a 2-run shot and John Peel added a solo dinger in his 2-for-3 effort.
The Tigers (9-1 Region 3-A) travel to Jenkins County on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Splash to host Youth Triathlon
Splash in the Boro Family Waterpark and Aquatic Center will host the first Splashy’s Youth Triathlon on Sunday, April 27 beginning at 2 p.m. inside Mill Creek Regional Park in Statesboro.
Boys and girls, ages 7 to 17, can compete in this triathlon. It is broken down into four age divisions to equalize the field while distances are adjusted to create a more safe and fun-filled experience.
Ages 7 to 9 will swim 50 yards, bike two miles and run1⁄2 mile. Ages 10 to 12 will swim 100 yards, bike two miles and run one mile. Ages 13 to 15 will swim 150 yards, bike 3.5 miles and run 11⁄2 miles. Ages 16 to 17 will Swim 200 yards, bike five miles and run 21⁄2 miles.
Triathlon’s incorporate swimming, biking, and running for a fun and exciting endurance race for all ages and skill levels. The swim portion will be held in the competition pool at Splash in the Boro, while the biking and running portions will be held inside Mill Creek Regional Park. The younger age group will start at 2 p.m. with each older age group going in order once the group before them are finished.
Registration for Splashy’s Youth Triathlon is being held at the Honey Bowen Building on Fair Road (M-F 8:30 a.m. - 6 p.m.), or online at www.splashintheboro.com. If there are still openings, race day registration will also be available between the hours of Noon and 1 p.m. only. Cost is $25 per athlete if registered by April 18. After this deadline, cost is $35 per athlete. There is a $5 discount for additional siblings. Participants will receive a gift bag, T-shirt, and be eligible for door prizes during the event.
