ECI stud Durden taken by Red Sox in 20th round

ECI's David Durden runs for a touchdown during a game in the 2016 season. Durden was also a standout in basketball and baseball for the Bulldogs.

While the Georgia Southern baseball team is receiving plenty of recognition for their success on draft day, one local high school senior has fallen through the cracks for being taken relatively high on day three of the MLB Draft.
Emanuel County senior David Durden was taken in the 20th round (611th overall pick) by the Boston Red Sox. Durden played centerfield for Bulldogs, which finished as one of the top four teams in the Class A public power ratings. But Durden's athletic prowess didn't stop on the baseball diamond. For the vaunted ECI football team, he led the team in scoring with 106 points (17 total touchdowns, four two-point conversions) and also started for the ECI basketball team.
However, there is a conundrum that lies in front of Durden now that he's a draft pick. Durden signed an LOI to play football at Mercer in the fall and has not made it public yet as to whether or not he intends to keep his commitment to the Bears. It's not totally uncommon for a draftee to break an LOI to go pro, but that's normally for a top ten or 15 round slot.
The Herald reached out to Durden on Twitter for comment, but at press time did not respond. Stay updated on all prep sports news in the Statesboro Herald or the @SHprepsports Twitter handle.
