Claxton's Delvin Diggs has made his decision — he's going to the Navy. The senior fullback rushed for 1582 yards on 273 carries this past season for the Tigers. Now he's headed to the Naval Academy to play for former Georgia Southern coach Paul Johnson.
"He's a cool dude," said Diggs of his future coach. "He's real down to earth."
Diggs made the decision after visiting the Navy this past weekend. He chose the Midshipman over Furman, Middle Tennessee State, Air Force, Wofford and Georgia Southern.
"The Navy is one of the top schools as far as academics," said Diggs. "That's real important to me. I think in the long run it'll be a big payoff for me."
At 5-foot-11 and 195 pounds, Diggs is a punishing runner with the ability to break tackles at the line of scrimmage and burst away from them down field. He averaged six yards per carry as a senior and his GPA stands at 93.
He also said he's ready for the challenge of joining the military.
"It's something I'm ready for," said Diggs. "A lot of leaders that lead the world are from the Naval Academy. They have a great tradition."
Diggs will enroll this fall at the Naval Academy Prep School in Newport, R.I. He'll spend a year there before moving on to Annapolis, Md., where he expects to see immediate playing time for the Midshipmen.
"I'm going to have to work hard," Diggs said. "But coach Johnson doesn't choose favorites. If you're talented enough and you're good enough you're going to play."
