Devils hit the road, travel to Lakeside

The Statesboro Blue Devils will face a wide open, passing attack when they travel to Lakeside tonight. Luckily, that’s exactly what they shut down last week.
“We’re fortunate that we’re seeing a mirror image in what we saw last week,” said coach Steve Pennington. “It should be (an advantage).”
The only wrinkle is that the Panthers (2-2, 1-2 Region 3-AAAA) are a bit more balanced in their offensive attack. Running back Jay Price and quarterback Chad Chandler are a duel threat in the backfield. Chandler also has a stellar arm which the Panthers use to stretch the defense.
“Our secondary will probably be more tested this week because Lakeside throws the ball down field,” Pennington said. “It’s going to be pivotal that we’re in the right places.”
Pennington added he’s also still looking for a complete effort from his defense.
“Defensively — in all aspects — we must improve our play,” he said. “With intensity, with assignments... the whole package we got to get better.”
Lakeside doesn’t have much size on the defensive side of the ball. The Panthers stunt and blitz to make up for it, led by Tom Mudrack, Kyle Tau, Critz Corbin and Will Evans.
“We hope that if they have some big plays, our big plays will nullify those,” said Pennington. “You live by the blitz you’re going to die by it. If we hit ‘em right, it’ll be nothing but green grass for us.”
The Panthers have wins over Aquinas (15-8) and the Academy of Richmond Academy (26-7).
