Bennett, Buchannon named to All-Star teams

    Statesboro’s Monnette Bennett has been to chosen to the 2008 Georgia Athletic Coaches All-Star game.
    Bennett, a senior at SHS, will play at Georgia Tech in the fall. She’ll join eight other girls on the South roster as they take on the North, March 30 at Savannah State University.
    The team will be coached by Willie Goolsby of Southwest Macon and begin at 2 p.m.
    Portal’s David Buchannon has also been chosen to play in the boys’ game, which will immedietly follow the girls’ contest.
    Buchannon, a senior at Portal, will join nine other players on the South roster.
    Tom Jordan of Savannah High will coach Buchannon’s team.

Lady Devils win North Division
    AUGUSTA — Monnette Bennett scored 21 points and Statesboro beat the Academy of Richmond County 39-34 to claim the Region 3-AAAA North Division title on Friday.
    Statesboro (19-3, 7-1) trailed 19-18 at halftime, but came back to complete the season sweep of the Musketeers (14-10, 4-4). Victoria Mikell added 10 for SHS.

BA claims No. 1 seed
    Bulloch Academy held off Trinity Christian 56-52 Friday to earn the GISA’s Region 2-AA top seed.
    The Gators (15-7, 7-1) trailed 10-2 in the first quarter, but came back to take a 23-17 lead at the half.
    Trinity would close the gap to 44-40 with a 7-0 run at the start of the fourth quarter, but BA never allowed the home team to get any closer.
    Darion Carter had 21 for BA and Will Powell added 10.
    The Gators host Citzens Christian Academy tonight for Senior Night at BA.

ARC beats Statesboro
    AUGUSTA — Statesboro fell 71-61 Friday night at the Academy of Richmond County.
    Eric Ferguson had 27 points and seven rebounds for SHS (12-10, 6-2) which will be the No. 2 seed from the North Division in next week’s Region 3-AAAA tournament. Mario Jackson added 14 points and six rebounds for the Blue Devils.
    The Musketeers (17-7, 7-1) will be the region’s No. 1 seed from the North Division.

Trinity tops Lady Gators
    DUBLIN — The Bulloch Academy Lady Gators fell 73-37 Friday night at Trinity Christian School.
    Kaylee Lanier and Addie Reddick both had 10 points for BA (13-11, 6-2 GISA Region 2-AA). Trinity improved to 8-0 in 2-AA play.

GSU takes doubleheader from SSU
    SAVANNAH — The Georgia Southern softball team opened the 2008 season on Thursday, taking both games of a doubleheader from Savannah State at the Paulson Athletic Park in Savannah.
    Eagles pitchers Melissa Laliberte (Ontario, Canada) and Megen Smith (Springfield, Ga.) no-hit the Tigers in game one and sophomore Kristan Glover (Evans, Ga.) added three home runs on the afternoon, as GSU downed Savannah State 16-0 in game one and 14-0 in the finale.
    Georgia Southern got things rolling early on, as sophomore Lindsey Hopkins (McDonough, Ga.) led off the first inning with a walk. Hopkins stole second on the first pitch and advanced to third on a fielder’s choice. The Eagles found the scoreboard for the first time on back-to-back home runs by Glover, driving in Hopkins and third baseman Robyne Siliga (Oceanside, Calif.).
    GSU opened up game one with five runs off of four hits in the fourth inning and seven runs on six hits in the fifth inning. The Tigers defense fell apart during the fourth inning as they committed five errors giving the Eagles numerous opportunities. Georgia Southern batted around during the top of the fourth and sophomore Jenny Side (Loganville, Ga.) belted a three-run homer in the fifth adding to the damage.
    Laliberte (1-0) picked up the first win, while Tiffany Ward (0-1) earned the loss for Savannah State.
     The Eagles continued where they left off in game two as Hopkins led off reaching on an error. After stealing second, Thweatt moved her to third and Glover picked up two RBI when she doubled scoring Hopkins and Thweatt. GSU reeled off six hits in the top of the first as they batted around compiling an early 5-0 advantage.
    Glover’s impressive performance continued in the top of the second with a lead-off homer to centerfield. She finished the day going 5-for-6 from the plate with eight RBI. Freshman Brianna Streetmon (Winder, Ga.) earned the win (1-0) in relief. Savannah State’s Rachel West picked up the loss.
     The Eagles pitching staff amassed 18 total strikeouts during the doubleheader and only allowed two hits.
    The Eagles are back in action today as they travel to Macon for a doubleheader with Mercer. The twinbill is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.

Eagles tennis 5, JU 2
    Tough singles play and a strong doubles outing helped the Georgia Southern men’s tennis team earn a hard fought win on Friday afternoon, as the Eagles defeated Jacksonville University at the Hanner Tennis Complex.
    The Eagles defeated the Dolphins 5-2 earning their second win of the season. It was the second time this season that the Eagles have avenged a 2007 loss. Earlier this season GSU defeated North Florida 5-2.
    Georgia Southern (2-3, 0-0 SoCon) took an early advantage earning the doubles point taking two of the three doubles matches. Senior Emmanuel Nkoueleue (Douala, Cameroon) and Borja Malet (Barcelona, Spain) defeated Jacksonville’s tandem of Jordi Ballester and Francisco Riveroll by a score of 8-5. Joris De Weerdt (Mortsel, Belgium) and Gregory Bekkers (Antwerp, Belgium) teamed up and sealed the doubles point, downing Vinicius Craveiro and Marcos Oliveira 8-4.
    In singles action, the Eagles took four of six matches from Jacksonville. Nkoueleue earned his second victory of the match defeating Ballester 7-5, 6-0 from the No. 1 singles position. Bekkers and Malet both earned victories using three sets and long extended rallies. Bekkers defeated Victor Vaz 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 2 slot, while Malet took down Riveroll 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 at No. 3 singles. De Weerdt added a victory for GSU at the No. 5 position upending Craveiro 6-0, 6-1.
    The Eagles return to the hard-court on Feb. 17 when they play host to Mercer at 1 p.m.

SHS Drill Meet
    The Statesboro High JROTC Drill Team will host a six-team meet today at SHS.
    The meet starts at 10 a.m. and Statesboro fans are welcome to come root on the Blue Devils.

GSU Baseball season tickets
    Season tickets for the 2008 Georgia Southern University baseball season are currently on sale. The Eagles are scheduled for 31 home games at J.I. Clements Stadium.
    Georgia Southern opens the 2008 campaign at home on Friday, Feb. 22 against Boston College, part of a three-game series.
    Season tickets prices are as listed: $100 for a reserved adult ticket; $50 for a reserved youth (ages 3-12); $70 for a general admission adult; $35 for a general admission youth and $60 for seniors/Georgia Southern faculty and staff.

GSU Baseball camp
    Georgia Southern baseball will be conducting the inaugural Little Eagles Baseball clinic, Saturday, Feb. 16, at J.I. Clements Stadium on the campus of Georgia Southern University for all boys and girls ages 4-14.
    The event is free of charge and Papa Johns Pizza will provide food for everyone in attendance at no cost.
    All kids must provide their own bat and glove in order to participate.  Parents are required to sign a waiver form during registration.  Kids who register will receive a free goodie bag that will contain spirit bands, a ticket to the men’s basketball game later that day at 7:30 p.m., and other promotional items.
    Following the morning’s baseball clinic, all are invited to join the GSU baseball team for Meet the Eagles day.  This is the first opportunity for fans to get their own posters, schedule cards and autographs from the Eagles.  There will also be a tour of the stadium given by Georgia Southern mascot, GUS.
    Following the tour of the Stadium an intra-squad scrimmage will take place.

NIRSA DAY 5K set for Feb. 16
    Approximately 150 runners are expected for the 5th annual NIRSA Day 5K on Saturday, Feb. 16 on the campus of Georgia Southern University.
    Entry fees are $15 for those postmarked by today and $20 after. Georgia Southern students can register for $10 and members of Statesboro Pacers receive a $2 discount. Proceeds benefit the UNITY Teen Advisory Board which aims to identify and address the issues of Bulloch County teenagers including tobacco, alcohol, drug use, teen pregnancy and civic engagement.
    The race begins at 9 a.m. and the course goes through scenic Georgia Southern campus, beginning and ending on Akins Blvd. in front of the Recreation Activity Center.
    Runners or walkers are welcome, as are pets who may want to make the 3.1 mile walk. T-shirts are guarunteed to those who register by today and will be given out on a first-come, first serve basis after that.
    A quarter-mile “kiddie run” will take place at 8:30 a.m. the morning of the race. Registration for that is free, but t-shirts are $5.
