Two Bulloch Academy seniors will get the chance to perform on the gridiron in front of the hometown crowd on Saturday afternoons.
Jordan Walker and Ethan Lovett have been both been given preferred walk-on status with the Georgia Southern University football team.
Preferred walk-on status means the pair will not have to go through the Eagles’ open tryouts to make the team.
Walker was Bulloch’s quarterback in the Gator triple-option offense for the past two seasons while Lovett was an A-back and a wide receiver. On defense, Walker was in the Gator secondary and Lovett was the strong-side linebacker.
“I’m really proud of Jordan and Ethan,” said Bulloch Academy football coach and athletic director Clint Morgan. “They worked hard both in the classroom and on the playing field during their high-school careers. They have represented Bulloch Academy well. I am glad that they have gotten this opportunity to continue putting on a football helmet and strapping on their shoulder pads at the college level.”
During Bulloch’s 2007 campaign, Walker passed for 1,135 yards and threw for 17 touchdowns and had only six interceptions. He also rushed for 842 yards on 136 carries and reached the end zone 11 times. On defense, he had 28 individual tackles, 15 assists, one tackle for loss, four pass breakups and two interceptions with one being for a score.
Walker set school records for passing attempts in a game (29), touchdown passes in a season (17) and tied records for touchdown passes in a game (4) and pass breakups in a game (4).
The 18-year old son of Lindsey and Devra Walker is currently joint-enrolled at Georgia Southern, is in the GSU Honors Program and is a 1906 Scholar.
Lovett, who will enroll at GSU after graduation from BA, is the 18-year old son of Olin and Cynthia Lovett. He also had a stellar 2007 football campaign.
He rushed for 628 yards on 74 carries and scored six touchdowns, caught 20 passes for 311 yards and five TDs, had an average of 24.1 yards per kickoff return and 19.2 yards per punt return. On defense, he had 51 individual tackles, 28 assists, eight tackles for loss, two fumble recoveries and one interception. Lovett also set a new school record for career touchdown receptions (12).
Both Lovett and Walker are multi-sport student athletes at Bulloch Academy.
Lovett is the current GISA Class AA state runner-up in the 100-meter and 300-meter hurdles and is the odds-on favorite to win the 2008 state championships in the events. He also is a pole vaulter in track and field and the starting right fielder on the baseball team.
Walker was a starting guard on the boys’ basketball team which won the Region 2-AA title, advanced to the second round of the GISA Class AA state basketball tournament and finished the season at 19-8. He is also the starting left fielder on the baseball team and is on the 4x400 and 4x100 relay teams in track and field.
