Southern Anglers Challenge held its April tournament out of Burtons Ferry on the Savannah River Saturday with 17 teams participating. The weather was great and the fishing was good. Every team participating in the tournament but one weighed in a five bass limit.

All fish were released back into the river with only one dead fish, which is a 98.75 % positive release percentage.

The first place team was Brian Archer from Appling and Winston Mock from Sylvania with a five bass limit at 15.97 pounds and big fish at 6.69 pounds. Second place went to Richard Boatright and Ken Morgan from Pooler with a five bass limit at 13.7 pounds. Coming in third place was Sterling Starling and Justin Daniels from Statesboro with a five bass limit at 11.59 pounds. Fourth place was Barry Durden and Mike Markovic from Rocky Ford with a five bass limit at 10.55 pounds, and fifth place was John Whatley and John McKenzie from Sylvania with a five bass limit at 9.1 pounds.

The first place team reported to have caught their fish in an ox bowl lake below Burtons Ferry with the largest fish being caught on top water with buzz bait. They reported to have culled at least seven times using a plastic worm dipped in Spike-It dye.

With just one event remaining, Richard Boatright and Ken Morgan lead the year’s point race with 1767. David Cole and Tracy Burnsed are currently in second place with 1764 points, and the team of Chad Sherrod and Don Sherrod with is in third place with 1761 points. The point champion for the season will receive six free tournament entries for the 2013 season.

The SAC championship tournament for 2012 will be on Clarks Hill Lake near Augusta September 21-22 with a $10,000 guaranteed prize for the first place team.

The final remaining tournament in the 2012 season will be held May 19 at Burtons Ferry beginning at safe light.
