STATESBORO, Ga. -- Mr. Troy Durell Clifton, age 98, died Sunday at Southern Manor Retirement Inn in Statesboro, under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice. The Bulloch County native was the sixth of eight children born to Loren Clifton and Lunie Womack Clifton. Troy joined the U.S. Navy following high school. He received multiple awards, including World War II Victory Medal, American Theater Ribbon and Good Conduct Medal (6th Award). He retired in 1962. Troy soon began working with Honeywell in St Petersburg, Florida, and retired following 21 years of employment. He returned to Bulloch County several years later. Troy was a member of Emit Grove Baptist Church, but attended Statesboro Primitive Baptist Church, where he was active in the brotherhood and the Frank Williams Sunday School Class. Troy also was a volunteer with “Big Brother“ for over 20 years. He was a former member of the Statesboro Kiwanis Club. He was preceded in death by his two wives, Mary Monte Clifton and Elise Clifton; his brothers and sisters, Lerlene Lanier, Albert Clifton, Ruel Clifton, Ottis Clifton, Erastus Clifton, T.J. Clifton, Lunie Mae Clifton; and a niece and nephew, Cheryl Rushing and Carlton Clifton. Surviving are his nephews, Ralph Clifton and Dan Clifton; and his nieces, Lurie Toth, Delores Gilstrap, Terry Sue Pye, Montell Lanier and Bettina Hardee. Many great-nieces and great-nephews also survive. The family will receive visitors on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the funeral hour at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home in Statesboro. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. in the chapel with Elder Randy Waters officiating, assisted by Mr. Ralph Cowart. Interment will be in Emit Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be his nephews and great-nephews. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Ogeechee Area Hospice, P.O.
