STATESBORO, Ga. -- Mr. John Albert Yarber, age 66, died July 20, 2018, at his residence.

    John worked for the Veteran’s Administration prior to joining the Merchant Marines. While in the Merchant Marines, he sailed for several months at a time and went to school, pursuing a marine engineering license. His tours of duty took him all over the world. His ship was in New Orleans when Hurricane Katrina hit the coast. The ship stayed there during the cleanup and served to provide clean water and shelter for the National Guard and may other services. John assisted the National Guard in moving people across bridges by playing his guitar and singing to them for comfort. For this, he received a humanitarian award. John served in the Merchant Marines for 25 years before retiring to Statesboro.

    John was predeceased in death by his father, Stanley G. Yarber; brother, Stanley G. Yarber Jr.; and his grandparents.
    He is survived by his mother, Virginia Clark Yarber; a sister, Virginia Irene Y. Worsfold; nieces, Diana Y. Cochran, Christina Y. Martin, Laura Irene W. Richaud; and nephews, Richard Worsfold and Eric Worsfold; two great-nieces and three great-nephews.
    The family will receive visitors on Saturday from 1 p.m. until the funeral hour at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home in Statesboro.
    The funeral will follow at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Joiner-Anderson with the Rev. Rebecca Blackwell officiating. Interment will follow in Bulloch Memorial Gardens.
    Pallbearers will be Al Clark, John Clark, Rene Clark, Bret Worsfold, Wain Yarber and Stephens Clark.
    The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Statesboro, 1215 Fair Road, Statesboro, GA 30458.
