REGISTER, Ga. -- Mr. James Franklin Akins, age 80, died on Thursday, October 11, 2018, at the Ogeechee Area Hospice inpatient facility.
    The native and lifelong resident of Bulloch County completed grades 1-9 at the Old Register School and graduated from Statesboro High School in 1955. Franklin attended Abraham Baldwin College and Georgia Teachers College, now Georgia Southern University.
    He was raised on a farm and worked as a farmer most of his life. During summers, he would supplement farming by working in the tobacco market.
    Early in his life, he became a crop adjuster. This came to an end when the company asked him to move to another area. Our God opened another door this time. It was as a mail carrier. He was a Register rural carrier for 30 years.
    He enjoyed spending time with his friends, family and bird hunting and fishing.
    Mr. Franklin gave his heart to our Lord and joined Union Baptist Church when he was 14 years old. He served the church in many ways. He served as Sunday school superintendent for 43 years and served as a deacon for 54 years. Mr. Franklin served as chairman of the deacons for 12 years.
    He was preceded in death by his father, Colon Akins; and mother, Edith Franklin Akins; and a brother, William Akins.
    Surviving is his wife of 57 years, Linda Nessmith Akins of Register; two sons and daughters-in-law, Tracy and Kathy Akins of Register and Chris and Andy Akins of Register; a daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne and Robin Rushing of Brunswick; three grandchildren, Dr. Zach Akins (Deb) of Kingsport, Tenn.; Samantha (Cy) Gilbreth of Amarillo, Texas; and Shelby Akins of Register.
    The visitation will be held on Saturday from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home.
    The funeral service will be held on Sunday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home with the Rev. Eddie Potts, Dr. Byron Twigg and the Rev. Gene Currin officiating.
    Pallbearers will be Sammie Neville, Jim Ackerman, Dennis Driggers, Rick Weaver, Grady Franklin and Marty Franklin.
    Honorary pallbearers will be the 1955 graduating class of Statesboro High School.
    The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Ogeechee Area Hospice, P.O. Box 531, Statesboro, GA 30459; or to Union Baptist Church, c/o Cathy Neville, 1353 Neville Dairy Road, Register, GA 30452.
