SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Mr. Darwin Gene Turner, age 91, died Friday, June 22, 2018, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah. The Bulloch County native was the son of the late Andrew Jackson Turner and Ola Hart Turner. He attended Marvin Pittman School in Statesboro.
Gene moved to Savannah, Georgia, in 1948 and began his long career in the grocery business. He worked with A&P Grocery from 1948 until 1977, and then with M&M Supermarkets for the next 12 years until his retirement.
Gene was a longtime member of the Ferguson Avenue Baptist Church in Savannah.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Esta Pearson Turner; six sisters, Evelyn Jeffers, Ruby Conley, Bell Lanier, Mae West, Myrtice Rogers and Dorothy Alcott; and his three brothers, Grady Turner, Clinton Turner and Alvin Turner.
Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Debra and David Jackson of Savannah; a son and daughter-in-law, Roy and Bonnie Smith of Savannah; his grandchildren, Heather Coleman-Brown (JaTavis) and Michael Smith (Kristen), all of Savannah; and Shannon Smith of Utah; and six great-grandchildren, Jordan Coleman, Bailey Coleman, Jacob Brown, Harrison Smith, Eleanor Smith, all of Savannah; and Cody Smith of Utah.
The family will receive visitors on Monday, June 25, 2018, from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home in Statesboro.
The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. in the chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. Bob Conley officiating. Interment will follow in Eastside Cemetery.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Ferguson Avenue Baptist Church, 10050 Ferguson Avenue, Savannah, Georgia 31406.
