Accident occurred Monday morning on Statesboro Bypass
fatal accident

A young mother was killed Monday morning in a single-vehicle accident on Veteran's Memorial Parkway in Statesboro.
Michelle Lynn Lewis, 25, was driving on the parkway between Fair Road and Brannen Street around 8:30 a.m. when her car left the roadway, entered a median, then struck a ditch at an emergency access road, said Georgia State Patrol Trooper First-Class Tyler Rickman.
Her car then vaulted, or became airborne, and overturned several times, ejecting her, he said.
Lewis' son Ricky Lewis, 5, was in a booster seat and seatbelt, but was severely injured. He was airlifted to Memorial Hospital in Savannah, where he remains in critical condition.'
His sister, Hailey, 8, was taken to East Georgia Regional Medical Center, but she was later also sent to Memorial Hospital for observation and treatment of minor injuries, Rickman said. She, too, was secured in a seat belt.
A portion of Veterans Memorial Parkway was closed for a time after the accident.
