Woman critical after crash
Accident closed Veterans Parkway
GSP accident

A crash that closed a portion of Veteran’s Memorial Parkway Wednesday morning resulted in a Statesboro woman being airlifted to a Savannah hospital for treatment of critical injuries.

Georgia State Patrol Cpl. Rusty Rankin said Ebonychu Bates of Hawthorne Road, was traveling south on the parkway around 8:53 a.m., approaching the traffic light at Akins Boulevard, when she failed to brake and struck the rear end of a semi-truck, stopped at the traffic light, driven by Lorene Edward Donaldson of Ollifftown Road in Twin City.

Bates’ Honda Civic was so damaged, responders had to use the Jaws of Life to extricate her from the wreckage, Rankin said.

Bates, 43, suffered “severe lacerations to her face and head” as well as other injuries, he said. Donaldson, 65, was uninjured.

Bates was issued a warning for following too closely, Rankin said.

The parkway was closed from around 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. due to the crash.

Emergency responders including EMTs and firefighters “did a great job,” he said, adding that Bates was reassured and kept calm during the extrication.
