According to Bulloch County Coroner Jake Futch, at least one victim was killed after a shooting that occurred Friday night at Park Place Apartments on Lanier Drive near Veterans Memorial Parkway.

Futch told a Statesboro Herald reporter that he had been called to East Georgia Regional Medical Center in response to a victim with a gunshot wound to the chest. Police also said five people were in custody, including one juvenile, and more were still being sought as of 10 p.m. Police were still talking to witnesses to determine if there were any more victims.

The first call came in to authorities at 8:35 p.m. with Statesboro Police Department, Georgia Southern Police, Bulloch County Sheriff’s Office and Georgia State Patrol responding to the scene. According to officials, several people ran across the bypass into a nearby field, where the five were detained.

Shortly afterward, the entrance to Park Place Apartments was blocked off by a Georgia Southern Police car and a large crowd of onlookers were gathered at the Fast & Easy across Lanier Drive.

More details will be reported as they become available. Check back with Statesboroherald.com for more information on this developing story.
