Two more victims were robbed at gunpoint Saturday, adding to a number of armed robberies Statesboro Police are investigating.
Early Saturday, around 1:50 a.m., a Don Corleone's pizza delivery man was taking an order of pizza, wings and a two-liter drink to a customer when he was approached by two men near Park Place Apartments, according to police reports.
One pulled a gun and demanded money. The two took $50 cash, as well as the food the man was trying to deliver. The victim was unharmed, said Statesboro Police Capt. Scott Brunson.
A short time later, police responded to The Exchange Apartments on Stambuk Lane, around 2:40 a.m. Saturday. There, a man told them two men held him at gunpoint and stole his wallet, containing $230, and a cell phone.
Another man in the apartment complex area told officers he was attacked by three men earlier, around 2:20 a.m., and fled, escaping the pursuing attackers by going into a friend's apartment. He suffered minor injuries after being struck several times by the offenders, Brunson said.
These incidents could be linked to others that took place last week, he said,.
"We can't rule it out at this time," Brunson said. "There are no suspects ( in the recent robberies) at this time."
Two were arrested last week in connection with armed robberies, and two others are still at large, he said. Those cases are still being investigated.
Around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23, Statesboro police responded to the University Pines Apartments area, where a man told them four men robbed him at gunpoint.
The male victim told police he was in the University Pines Apartments area when the four men approached him and asked for a cigarette. Then, one man pointed a gun at his head while the other three struck him and went through his pockets, he said.
Zackery Allen Durrence, 17, Bream Road, and Malcolm Jamal Gainey, 17, Hilltop Circle, Mableton, were arrested near the scene, and two suspects remain at large.
Other armed robberies with similar scenarios - offenders asking for cigarettes, for a light or asking for change - have occurred in the Georgia Southern University area over the past several months. There have been several incidents where food delivery employees were robbed as well.
Earlier this year, Statesboro and University police teamed up to arrest several they said are responsible for a series of similar robberies, but weeks after those arrests, the robbery incidents have resumed.
Brunson said the cases are under active investigation, and urged anyone with information contact the Statesboro Police Criminal Investigations Division at 764-1542 or the Statesboro Police Department at 764-9911.
