Troopers seek witness to hit-and-run
Victim critical
GSP accident

A man is in critical condition after a hit-and-run incident Tuesday, and Georgia State Patrol troopers are seeking a witness to the crash.

The hit-and-run incident occurred on Lanier Drive near Park Place Apartments inside the city limits of Statesboro. The offender struck the victim, who was riding a bicycle on Lanier Drive.

The victim, who was not yet identified Wednesday evening because troopers had not yet located relatives, is being treated in a Savannah hospital, said GSP Trooper 1st Class Hunter Oglesby.

A witness driving a red Chevrolet pickup “came forward and provided pertinent information about the crash to law enforcement,” Oglesby said. This information led to the location of the hit-and-run vehicle and driver. The Georgia State Patrol is now seeking to identify the driver of the red Chevrolet pickup truck.

William Luther Powell, 30, of Old Register Road, was arrested in connection to the hit-and-run. According to Bulloch County Jail records, Powell was charged with DUI/less safe, failure to report an accident with injury or death, suspended license, hit-and-run, serious injury by vehicle and failure to maintain lane. Further charges may be pending, Oglesby said.

To provide information for this case or to provide the identity of the witness, please contact Cpl. Derrell Thigpen or Oglesby with the Georgia State Patrol Post 45, Statesboro, at (912) 688-6999.
