Two Statesboro residents were killed and two others were seriously injured in three separate automobile crashes in the area over the holiday weekend.
Crashes on Ben Grady Collins Road and Pulaski Highway took the lives of two men, and man injured in a head-on collision on U.S. 301 South was airlifted to the hospital for serious injuries, said Georgia State Patrol officials.
Kelvin Austin Oxendine, 29, West Main Street, was killed Monday night in a single vehicle crash on Ben Grady Collins Road, said Sr. Trooper Ricky Helton. Tuesday morning, Jeremiah J. Reed, 26, Park Place Apartments, was killed in a single vehicle crash on Pulaski Highway near Veteran's Memorial Parkway, he said.
GSP Sgt. Chris Lamb said an unidentified male passenger in one of two cars involved in the head-on collision Monday evening was airlifted to Savannah with serious injuries.
Troopers were called to the dirt portion of Ben Grady Collins Road near Sonny Hagins Road near Portal around 8:40 p.m. Monday, Helton said. Investigations indicated Oxendine lost control of his 1995 Chevrolet Blazer, overturned in a ditch, and was partially ejected from the vehicle. He was not wearing a seat belt, he said.
Oxendine was transported to East Georgia Regional Medical Center by EMS and was later pronounced dead, he said.
Alcohol was involved in the accident and alcohol and drug tests are pending, Helton said.
Troopers were called to the scene of a head-on collision on U.S. 301 South "just north of Interstate 16" around 10:42 p.m. Monday, said Lamb. Investigations revealed John Anderson, 56, Claxton, was driving a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado the wrong way in the southbound lane of U.S. 301, he said.
Anderson struck a 1995 Oldsmobile Delta 88 driven by Robert Leonard, 80, Sunset Way Apartments, St. Pete Beach, Fla., head-on, he said.
Leonard was treated and released at the scene, Anderson was transported to East Georgia Regional Medical Center by EMS, and an unidentified male passenger in Leonard's vehicle was airlifted to Savannah by Life Star with serious injuries.
The accident is still under investigation, Lamb said. Charges are pending and investigators are awaiting the results of alcohol tests, he said.
Reed was killed around 3:48 a.m. Tuesday when he lost control of his 1997 Ford Taurus on Pulaski Highway near the bypass, he said. "He lost control, left the roadway, and struck a utility pole," killing him upon impact.
Two passengers in the vehicle were also injured, he said.
Quaviese Holloway, 28, South Main Street, was airlifted by Life Star helicopter to Savannah. He was unconscious and suffered serious injuries, he said. Demetrius Millen, 26, Burgest Freeman Lane, Sylvania, was transported to East Georgia Regional Medical Center, where he was treated and released.
Alcohol was believed to be involved in the accident, and alcohol and drug tests are pending, Helton said.
