It’s estimated there are some 10,000 different religions in the world. Some are small, some are large, some are huge! Among them is the religion of Christianity.
Devoted Christians have very strong beliefs that bind them together in a common faith. Many people don’t know what Christians believe. I’d like for us to think about this question: just what do Christians believe?
First, Christians believe in God’s existence as evidenced by creation. A few people believe our universe is eternal. But every living thing dies, but eternity doesn’t allow this possibility. We believer in God as evidenced by our moral nature. Every human culture believes in morality – the fact that there a difference between right and wrong. This faith is virtually the same in everyone. Murder is wrong, not right. The same is true of theft, marriage principle and every concern of human relationship.
Second, Christians believe that Jesus is God’s eternal son Jesus. and the holy spirit is the divine giver of the word of God. This is based on the evidence of the teaching of Jesus and other Old and New Testament preachers. This includes, among other topics, Jesus as the savior of all who trust him and are faithful until the end of life.
Third, Christians believe in the Bible as the revealed word of God in written form.
The written word of God allows us to understand what God wants us to do to please him.
There are no other divinely inspired messages from God about his will – none! The apostle Paul wrote to his young disciple Timothy said that “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.”
Fourth, Christians believe the New Testament is the will of God for people today.
The Law of Moses and the Old Testament prophets are beneficial for our study, but aren’t authoritative today. Salvation from sin is found through faith in Christ – not Moses or anyone else! God said to three of the apostles as Jesus spoke with Moses and Elijah, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.”
Fifth, Christians believe in the unity of believers, based on the teaching of God’s word and nothing else! Some today don’t believe this, but think that other writing have been given by God as well. Not so. Believers in Jesus need to commit themselves to the teaching of the New Testament. Scripture is insistent that we believe, teach and pactice the teaching of Jesus and other men inspired by the Holy Spirit. Jesus prayed his apostles would be “one.” (John 17:21) Paul taught the importance of unity among believers to the Ephesian church.
Sixth, believe that salvation is through Christ alone. Peter insisted that “… here is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved. Paul wrote that “... by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
There are many other things Christians believe based on the Bible, God’s will for all. These are some of the principal teachings.
