A tanker flipped Tuesday afternoon at the intersection of U.S. 80 West and Veteran's Memorial Parkway. Firefighters, rescue units and Georgia State Patrol troopers responded to the scene and called Haz-Mat units to handle a fuel spill.
The driver, Darrell Morgan, 38, Augusta, suffered a severe laceration to the head and was transported to East Georgia Regional Medical Center for treatment. GSP Senior Trooper D. H. Averitt said speed was apparently involved as Morgan, heading east, attempted a right turn on the bypass and rolled over.
He was carrying 7,500 gallons of diesel, much of which spilled onto the roadway and was cleaned up by a Savannah environmental cleanup crew, Averitt said. No charges were filed.
