A suspicious device found during a traffic stop resulted in a portion of Highway 80 West being closed Tuesday afternoon.

Investigators were still inspecting the unidentified device Tuesday evening and had taken one person into custody, but no information was available regarding possible charges, said Bulloch County Sheriff Noel Brown.

Bulloch County sheriff’s Chief Deputy Bill Black said the device was not an explosive and was determined not to be a danger to the public.

Just before 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, members of the Bulloch County Crime Suppression Team conducted a traffic stop on Highway 80 near Akins Pond Road, Brown said. When CST deputies found the suspicious device, they contacted Statesboro’s Region 5 office of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to assist in securing the scene for safety, he said.

The Georgia State Patrol Post 45 and Georgia Department of Transportation responded to assist with closing the roads, and traffic was rerouted.

After determining the device did not pose a threat, the roads were reopened around 2 p.m., Brown said.

Statesboro firefighters and Portal police also responded to assist, he said.

Black said further information regarding the device and possible arrests may be released later, as the criminal investigation by the Bulloch County Crime Suppression Team, as well as the GBI, continues.
