Statesboro police arrested a man on Sunday who is suspected in an armed robbery committed June 1.

Ronald Thomas Wells, 25, of Lanier Drive, is being held in the Bulloch County Jail on charges of armed robbery, aggravated assault and first-degree burglary, according to jail records.

Cpl. Travis Smallegan was on an unrelated call for service at Eagle Villa Suites on Sunday when he recognized Wells and arrested him for an active warrant without incident, according to a press release from Statesboro police Deputy Chief Rob Bryan, interim chief.

Just before 1 a.m. on June 1, police learned that an armed robbery had occurred at an Eagle Court apartment.

"Officers responded and began investigating the incident," Bryan said in the release. "It was reported to the officers that a black male with a T-shirt tied around his face pointed a handgun at the victims while forcing his way into the residence. The male demanded money, then fled the area on foot. Officers were unable to locate the offender in the area."

The case was turned over to the Criminal Investigations Bureau and assigned to Detective Kevin Wadley, who, through his investigation, identified Wells as the offender. Wadley secured a warrant for Wells' arrest, and Smallegan arrested Wells on that warrant, Bryan said.

Anyone with information concerning this case is asked to contact the Statesboro Police Department at (912) 764-9911.
