The Statesboro-Bulloch County Parks and Recreation Department begins summer camp registration Wednesday, with sign-ups available through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. each day.
There are two summer camp options this year.
First, there is the traditional summer camp, Camp Cherokee, which is offered to children currently in pre-K through fifth grade. The second option is a new summer camp, Kids Zone, which is directed toward children currently in second through sixth grades. All camps meet Monday through Friday. Weekly sessions are offered beginning June 1 and ending July 31.
Camp Cherokee is a traditional summer day camp held from 7:30 a.m.–6 p.m. for children who are currently in pre-K to fifth grade. There is another Camp Cherokee option for children to stay from
7:30 a.m.–2 p.m. Camp Cherokee is held at the former Julia P. Bryant Elementary School at
400 Donnie Simmons Way.
Kim Sharpe, events supervisor, said: “This camp will provide the children with many engaging and enrichment activities as well as field trips and swim time.”
Kids Zone, the new camp offered this summer, is designed to help children improve on or learn a specific hobby or skill, such as soccer, basketball and more. Each week will focus on a new area.
There is no designated area for Kids Zone. Instead, the location will change based on the activities the children will be learning. The camp will run from 7:30 a.m.–6 p.m. for children who are currently enrolled in the second through sixth grades.
“Kids Zone will give older children another option outside of the traditional summer camp and will provide them with the ability to learn and develop new skills,” Sharpe said.
Kids Zone will begin in the mornings with skill time. The afternoons will be a camp setting where campers will participate in activities related to the skill learned in the morning.
Kids Zone has very limited spots available, so early registration is ideal for securing a spot.
By offering two types of summer camps, Sharpe said youngsters can try a blending of the two camps. One week they can go to Camp Cherokee and the next week to Kids Zone, if they are grade eligible.
