Portal police said they arrested a man Friday night after his flight from a road check led to a chase.

Portal Police Chief Jason Sapp said his department was conducting a license and sobriety check near the city limits when an SUV stopped short of the checkpoint, and the driver shut off his headlights before turning around.

Portal police gave chase, following the driver later identified as Shawn Eugene Rich, 33, of Soloman Circle, as far as Hopeulikit before Georgia State Patrol troopers and Bulloch County Sheriff's deputies joined in the pursuit, Sapp said.

"Stop sticks," or spike strips, were placed in the roadway on U.S. Highway 80 near Akins Pond Road, where Rich drove over them, Sapp said. He continued toward Statesboro for another half mile until he was apprehended, Sapp said.

Rich was seen throwing unknown items out of the vehicle, and a small amount of marijuana was discovered in the SUV as well, Sapp said. The items tossed from the SUV were not recovered.

Rich was charged with obstruction, fleeing/attempt to elude, and driving with a suspended license. He was taken to the Bulloch County Jail, where he later posted bond.
